The K 12 District Library Media Specialist serves as a teacher, instructional leader, information specialist, technology integration partner, and program administrator supporting teaching and learning across all grade levels. This role is responsible for developing and sustaining a comprehensive district library media program that promotes literacy, inquiry, digital citizenship, information literacy, innovation, and equitable access to resources and technology.
The Library Media Specialist collaborates with administrators, teachers, students, families, and community partners to ensure students become effective, ethical users and creators of information while supporting district curriculum goals, New Hampshire educational standards, and the district mission.
Key Responsibilities
Instructional Facilitation & Teaching
  • Teach students essential computer skills, digital citizenship, and information literacy skills.
  • Collaborate with teachers to provide resources, co-plan activities, and integrate technology and library resources into units and lessons.
  • Guide students and staff in searching for informational needs, critically evaluating materials, and synthesizing findings into new knowledge.
  • Identify, plan, and deliver professional learning opportunities that enhance digital-age literacy, inventive thinking, and effective communication across the district.
  • Model continuous learning, staying current with effective instructional strategies and practices.

Literacy & Student Engagement
  • Promote a love of reading and demonstrate strong knowledge of literature appropriate for elementary, middle, and high school grade levels.
  • Maintain supportive, engaging, and innovative physical and virtual library environments.
  • Foster a collaborative culture that encourages learning, creativity, risk-taking, and positive student outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain standards of student conduct to ensure a functional, positive learning atmosphere.
  • Maintain effective communication with families and encourage parental involvement in student education.

Program Management & Operations
  • Organize, manage, and maintain district print and electronic collections to support student and teacher learning.
  • Assist with the preparation and administration of the media center budget.
  • Maintain the inventory of audio-visual equipment as specified by the Director of Technology.
  • Oversee collection maintenance, cataloging, and circulation processes.

Collaboration & District Leadership
  • Serve as an active member of the District Technology Team and assist with the development of the District Technology Plan.
  • Collaborate with building and district committees to support student learning and district initiatives.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by building principals or central office leadership.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of differentiated instruction, student learning styles, and federal/state education laws.
  • Strong technical aptitude, including familiarity with automated library systems, computer networks, and instructional software applications.
  • Ability to organize work, manage multiple building priorities, and work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills for interacting with students, staff, parents, and community members

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in an education-applicable discipline required; Master's Degree in Library Science or related field preferred.
  • Certification: Valid New Hampshire Educator License with a Library Media Specialist (K 12) endorsement
