Join Us and Make an Impact LA County Library provides services to 3.4 million people over 3,000 square miles. It operates 86 libraries, 4 Cultural Resource Centers, and a mobile fleet consisting of 15 vehicles. Essential Job Functions In the role of Library Associate, you will: Process library materials for customers, including check-in and check-out procedures. Register new customers (borrowers) in accordance with established specialized protocols.
Explain and enforce library policies and procedures. Provide information and answer questions from the public regarding library rules, including fines, fees, and material location, etc. Operate office equipment, including computers, and perform other incidental duties in a small office setting.
Assist in shelving and moving materials. Prepare and process outgoing and incoming delivery shipments as vital, including packing and unpacking. Provide support for various tasks and special projects, as needed.
May perform other related duties as assigned. Requirements Requirement to Qualify Three (3) months of work experience providing direct public contact and customer service, including service delivery in person, by telephone, or through online platforms, such as sales, food service, reception, or comparable roles. Age: At least 18 years of age.
Physical Class III - Moderate This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Desirable Qualifications Additional credit may be given to applicants who possess the following Desirable Qualifications: Successful completion of at least one (1) technical library course from an accredited institution*. Work experience supporting the daily operations of a public library, including performing tasks such as organizing, shelving, retrieving, and maintaining library materials to ensure accessibility and accurate filing.
Receiving, sorting, and processing incoming and outgoing deliveries. Assisting customers by providing directional information. Maintaining supplies and materials in public service areas, including forms, handouts, promotional materials, and other customer-use items.
Inspecting library materials for damage, cleanliness, and routine repair needs and perform basic remediation as appropriate. Assisting with the setup, rearrangement, and removal of equipment and other items for library programs, meetings, and special events. Supporting facility opening and closing procedures, including security checks and flag raising/lowering activities.
Maintaining the cleanliness, organization, and overall appearance of library facilities and public spaces. Provide basic assistance to students and customers by directing them to appropriate educational and informational resources. Special Requirement Information: Required experience must be fully met at the time of filing and clearly indicated on the application.
No Out-Of-Class or Withholds are allowed for this examination. Qualifying experience is evaluated on a basis of a 40-hour workweek. Experience earned in a part-time position will receive prorated credit consistent with the actual hours worked on a regular basis.
*To receive credit for your education, include a legible copy of all relevant official documents, including your transcript from an accredited institution or email it to LibraryExams@library.lacounty.gov within seven (7) calendar days of filing your application. The document should show the date the degree was conferred or number of units and the type of unit system used (e.g., semester, quarter) and be in English. If not in English, then translation is required

Additional Information Our Assessment Process The assessment will consist of a Training & Experience (T&E) Evaluation. This assessment will evaluate the training, experience, education and desirable qualifications you provide in the supplemental questionnaire and worth 100% of your total score. Applicants must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher to be added to the eligible list.
SPECIAL INFORMATION Eligibility and Vacancy Information Applicants who pass the assessment will be placed on the eligible list in order of their final score for a period of twelve (12) months.
