What challenges might a Temporary Systems Administrator face when joining an organization mid-project?

As a Temporary Systems Administrator, you may encounter challenges such as quickly learning the organization's specific network configurations, adapting to established IT protocols, and building rapport with the existing IT team. Since you'll likely fill a short-term need or cover during transitions, there can be pressure to resolve issues and maintain uptime with minimal onboarding. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as you'll often collaborate with other IT staff and end-users to ensure a seamless transition and continued system reliability.

Is sysadmin a stressful job?

System administrators often work in high-pressure environments where they are responsible for maintaining network and system uptime, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring security. The job can be stressful during system outages or urgent incidents, but it also involves routine tasks and the use of monitoring tools to manage workload effectively.

Is sysadmin an entry level job?

A temporary systems administrator role is typically not considered entry level, as it usually requires prior experience with network management, server configuration, and troubleshooting. Many employers prefer candidates with relevant certifications such as CompTIA Server+ or Cisco CCNA, and some experience with scripting or automation tools. Entry-level positions in IT may be labeled as help desk or support technician roles instead.

What are Temporary Systems Administrators?

Temporary Systems Administrators are IT professionals hired on a short-term basis to manage, maintain, and support an organization's computer systems and networks. They perform tasks such as installing and configuring software and hardware, monitoring system performance, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring security protocols are followed. These roles are often filled to cover staff absences, handle special projects, or address increased workload during certain periods. Temporary Systems Administrators need to adapt quickly to new environments and are expected to possess strong technical and problem-solving skills.

Is a sysadmin job in high demand?

Systems administrator roles are in high demand due to ongoing reliance on IT infrastructure across industries. Employers seek candidates with skills in network management, security, and cloud technologies, often requiring certifications like CompTIA or Cisco. The job market for sysadmins remains strong, especially for those with experience in automation and cybersecurity.

Will sysadmin be replaced by AI?

Systems administrators play a critical role in managing and maintaining IT infrastructure, and while AI tools can automate routine tasks like monitoring and troubleshooting, they are unlikely to fully replace sysadmins. Human oversight, problem-solving skills, and adaptability remain essential in complex or unexpected situations, making the role resilient to complete automation.

Job description

Description

This is not a traditional, siloed service desk role. We are actively seeking a candidate who is well-versed in troubleshooting and resolving issues within Microsoft Intune-managed environments, while also operating effectively across desktop support, endpoint management, security compliance, and network-related challenges. You will be expected to move fluidly across technical domains. This means owning problems end-to-end rather than handing them off—while balancing user experience, security requirements, and operational efficiency. This role is in support of a secure and enterprise scale environment with federally regulated compliance requirements.

About the Candidate

We are specifically looking for someone who can:

• Troubleshoot and resolve Intune-related issues, including device configuration, policy application, compliance failures, and software deployment

• Provide hands-on desktop support in an enterprise environment, including OS, hardware, and user-facing issues

• Diagnose and address network connectivity issues (e.g., access restrictions, firewall rules, DNS, VPN, IP/Port/URL filtering)

• Navigate and resolve security and compliance-related challenges, including endpoint hardening, policy enforcement, and audit readiness

• Operate effectively across multiple functions—including endpoint management, support, security, and asset management—without reliance on rigid team boundaries

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in information systems or relevant field and 3+ years practical experience in the field

• Ability to obtain public trust clearance

• Ability to self-manage work tasks using M365 based tools

• Demonstrated and proven ability to independently resolve issues, improve day-to-day operations with self-driven initiatives, and operate with a growth mindset

• Hands-on experience administering or operating network access controls in the form of IP:Port or URL based filters

• Practical experience managing enterprise desktops within a Microsoft Intune managed environment

• Hands-on experience troubleshooting and administering Windows operating systems in an enterprise environment – ideally including peripheral device management, asset management, and VOIP operations

• Understanding and practical exposure with regulatory controls, baselines, and security policies within an Azure Entra and Intune based environment with enterprise desktops and endpoints (CIS benchmarks, STIG, etc)

• Located near Indianapolis, IN and willingness to be on-site in support of the mission

Must have:
