How much do technical lead jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 26, 2026, the average yearly pay for technical lead in the United States is $156,348.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $116,000.00 and $205,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technical Lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technical Lead, you need strong expertise in software development, architecture design, and experience leading engineering teams, often backed by a relevant degree and years of hands-on coding. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) is typically required. Outstanding communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills help a Technical Lead effectively guide teams and bridge technical and business goals. These skills are crucial for delivering quality solutions, aligning team efforts, and ensuring project success in dynamic tech environments.

Which 3 jobs will survive AI?

For a Technical Lead, roles that require complex problem-solving, strategic decision-making, and deep human interaction are less likely to be automated. These include positions like software architects, cybersecurity specialists, and data scientists, which involve designing systems, managing security, and interpreting complex data. Skills in leadership, critical thinking, and domain expertise will remain valuable as AI tools augment these roles.

What is the work of a technical lead?

A technical lead oversees a development team, guiding technical decisions, ensuring project quality, and coordinating tasks to meet deadlines. They often act as a bridge between management and engineers, requiring strong technical skills, leadership, and communication abilities. Their responsibilities include code reviews, architecture planning, and mentoring team members.

What Is a Technical Lead?

A technical lead architect comes up with solutions for business projects. Their job duties include technical consultation with clients, identifying sales goals, and developing a team of technical workers to carry out the development and implementation of the plan. As a team lead, they are the main point of contact for customers and the development group’s manager. It is their job to ensure that the client’s wishes are carried out during the development process and that tasks are completed promptly.

What are Technical Leads?

Technical Leads, often called Tech Leads, are experienced professionals who oversee the technical aspects of a software development team or project. They help guide the team's technical direction, make key architectural decisions, and ensure best practices in coding and development are followed. In addition to hands-on programming, Technical Leads mentor team members, coordinate with stakeholders, and often bridge the gap between management and engineering. Their role is crucial in delivering high-quality software efficiently and aligning technical efforts with business goals.

What is the highest salary for a technical lead?

The highest salaries for a technical lead can exceed $150,000 annually, especially in high-demand industries or senior roles in large companies. Factors such as experience, certifications, industry, and location influence compensation, with some senior technical leads earning over $200,000 in certain markets.

What is the difference between Technical Lead vs Software Engineer?

AspectTechnical LeadSoftware Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's or higher in CS or related field; often some leadership experienceBachelor's or higher in CS or related field
Work EnvironmentLeads technical projects, collaborates with teams, and guides developmentDevelops software, writes code, and implements features
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across tech companies, startups, and large enterprisesCommon in all software development settings

The main difference is that a Technical Lead oversees technical aspects and guides teams, while a Software Engineer focuses on coding and implementing solutions. The Technical Lead has more leadership responsibilities, whereas the Software Engineer concentrates on technical execution.

How does a Technical Lead typically balance hands-on technical work with team leadership responsibilities?

Technical Leads often divide their time between actively contributing to codebases and providing guidance to their development teams. While they may still participate in design, code reviews, and complex problem-solving, a significant part of their role involves mentoring team members, facilitating communication, and ensuring alignment with project goals. Successful Technical Leads establish clear priorities, delegate effectively, and foster collaboration across cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality solutions. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong organizational skills and a focus on both technical excellence and team development.

How much do tech leads get paid?

Tech leads typically earn between $100,000 and $160,000 annually in the United States, depending on experience, location, and industry. Seniority, technical skills, and certifications can influence salary levels, with some earning higher compensation in tech hubs or large organizations.

Job description

Title: Data Integration and Pipeline – Lead Engineer

Location: Miami Lakes, FL (Hybrid)

Duration: Long-term Contract / Permanent

SUMMARY:

  • We are seeking a Data Integration & Pipeline Lead Engineer (Informatica Technical Lead) to provide hands-on technical leadership across our enterprise data integration platform.
  • This role is responsible for the design, build, stability, and technical evolution of Informatica-based data pipelines while partnering closely with architecture, platform leadership, and delivery managers.
  • This is a technical leadership role—not a people-management role
  • The Technical Lead sets the technical bar, ensures production stability, mentors engineers, and coordinates execution across teams, while delivery ownership and people management remain with the Informatica Manager.
  • The role supports a hybrid environment that includes Informatica (PowerCenter / IDMC) and possibly a gradual evolution toward modern cloud and analytics platforms (Snowflake, dbt).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties and special projects may be assigned.

Technical Ownership & Delivery

  • Lead the end-to-end technical design and implementation of Informatica ETL/ELT pipelines, including sourcing, transformations, orchestration, error handling, restartability, and downstream dependencies.
  • The Lead will also administrative responsibilities such as upgrades/hotfixes, manage repository folders, and will lead Informatica related tasks for infrastructure upgrades and security patches.
  • Establish and enforce technical standards and reusable patterns for mappings, workflows, parameterization, performance tuning, and monitoring.
  • Partner with data architects to translate target-state architecture into executable Informatica designs, including hybrid and dual-run patterns.
  • Review and guide implementation work to ensure design integrity, scalability, and operational resilience
  • Create minimal scripting in Python.
  • Develop and implement orchestration and ingestion patterns for API integrations, event driven patterns

Production Stability & Support

  • Serve as the primary technical escalation point for complex production incidents, leading deep root-cause analysis and permanent remediation.
  • Identify systemic failure patterns and drive architectural or design changes to reduce recurring incidents
  • Ensure pipelines meet defined SLAs, reliability, and audit expectations, especially for regulatory and risk-sensitive data flows.
  • Collaborate with support and scheduling teams to ensure smooth promotion, execution, and recovery of Informatica jobs.

Estimation, Planning & Coordination

  • Break down requirements into technically meaningful components and help shape realistic estimates based on data volume, transformation complexity, dependencies, and risk.
  • Coordinate closely with the Informatica Manager to surface technical risks early, enabling proactive re-planning rather than late delivery issues.
  • Participate in project planning, design reviews, and readiness checkpoints to ensure technical feasibility and delivery confidence.
  • Communicate technical concepts clearly to delivery managers and non-technical stakeholders without over- or under-simplifying.

Mentorship & Technical Quality

  • Mentor data engineers on best practices, debugging techniques, performance optimization, and operational thinking.
  • Raise overall team capability through design reviews, knowledge sharing, and consistent technical guidance.
  • Help reduce key-person risk through documentation, standardization, and shared ownership of critical pipelines.

Modernization & Platform Evolution (as applicable)

  • Identify candidates suitable for refactoring or migration to modern data platforms.
  • Support incremental modernization efforts by defining safe migration approaches that minimize business disruption.
  • Contribute technically to initiatives involving Snowflake, dbt, AWS, or cloud-native tools, where applicable.

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor''s Degree is preferred and master’s degree is a plus.

  • Proven experience supporting business-critical, regulated datasets in production environments.
  • Solid SQL skills and experience with scripting languages used in data processing.
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve complex data pipeline failures under operational pressure.
  • Clear communicator with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Exposure to modern data platforms tools such as Snowflake, AWS, dbt, or other cloud-based data environments, and their orchestration tools.

Preferred / Optional Experience (Nice to Have)

  • Experience working in banking or financial services environments.
  • Familiarity with hybrid architecture and phased modernization approaches.
  • Cloud certifications (AWS or equivalent) are a plus, not a requirement.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • AWS or other cloud provider certifications is a plus

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Deep understanding of data integration principles, pipeline orchestration, data quality, and lifecycle management.
