What Does a Surveillance Manager Do?

As a surveillance manager at a casino, hotel, retail store, school, or transportation facility, your duties are to monitor video security systems and make routine physical inspections of the facilities to prevent crime, such as theft and cheating. As a manager, your responsibilities are also to hire and train new employees in the department, help institute security protocols and strategies, and carry out the orders of the department head or director of security. You must routinely log your findings and keep careful visual and written records of your shifts.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Surveillance Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Surveillance Manager, you need expertise in security operations, risk assessment, and regulatory compliance, typically supported by a degree in criminal justice or a related field and relevant supervisory experience. Familiarity with CCTV systems, surveillance software, and incident reporting tools is essential, along with certifications such as CPP (Certified Protection Professional) being advantageous. Strong leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are crucial for managing teams and handling sensitive security matters. These skills ensure the effective monitoring and protection of assets, compliance with legal standards, and prompt response to potential security threats.

What are some common challenges faced by a Surveillance Manager, and how can they effectively address them?

Surveillance Managers often face challenges such as staying current with evolving security technology, maintaining vigilance over large areas or multiple locations, and ensuring compliance with strict regulatory requirements. To address these, they should invest in ongoing training for both themselves and their team, foster open communication with other departments like security and compliance, and regularly review and update surveillance protocols. Leveraging advanced monitoring systems and data analytics can also help them efficiently detect and respond to unusual activities.

What are Surveillance Managers?

Surveillance Managers are responsible for overseeing surveillance operations, typically within casinos or other gaming establishments, to ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and internal policies. They manage teams of surveillance agents who monitor activities via security cameras and other systems to detect suspicious or illegal behavior. Surveillance Managers also coordinate with law enforcement and regulatory agencies when necessary, conduct investigations, and prepare detailed reports. Their role is crucial in maintaining the safety, security, and integrity of the facility.

Job description

We are looking for a highly analytical, tech-forward Market / Trade Surveillance Managerย  to join our surveillance and monitoring team. Unlike a traditional "paper-pushing" compliance role, this is a deeply technical position designed for someone who enjoys working within modern software stacks and tools to ensure market integrity. The successful candidate will be the "power user" of our surveillance ecosystem, responsible for the day-to-day operation of our monitoring tools and maintaining our high standards with US regulators.
Core Responsibilities
โ— Trade Surveillance Execution: Perform real-time monitoring of all exchange activity, security feeds, and product safety data to identify potential market abuse (wash trading, spoofing, etc.) and ensure price discovery is fair and not manipulated
โ— Investigative Management: Manage investigations into potential market manipulation and analyze evidence, auditing reports, and managing team caseloads.
โ— Settlement Oversight: Monitor trade activity to prevent disruption of cash settlement processes and ensure participants hold adequate margin and that large positions do not threaten clearing stability.ย
โ— Tool Management (Eventus & Scilla): Act as the primary administrator and lead analyst for Eventus Validus. You will also utilize Scilla to monitor and audit technical compliance workflows and automated transaction logs.
โ— Alert Optimization: Regularly tune surveillance parameters and "logic" within Eventus to reduce false positives while ensuring 100% capture of suspicious activity.
โ— Market Risk Monitoring: Monitor real-time market data to ensure participant compliance with margin requirements and position limits.
โ— Regulatory Reporting: Assist in the preparation of weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports for the CFTC and NFA.
โ— Audit Support: Serve as a technical subject matter expert during regulatory examinations, demonstrating the efficacy of our monitoring tools and data integrity.ย
โ— Policy & Documentation: Draft and maintain policies and procedures, maintain audit trails, and manage trade data records.
โ— Team Leadership & Mentoring: Hiring, training, and providing feedback to a team of analysts, investigators, and surveillance technicians.ย
Required Experience & Skills
โ— Market Knowledge: Deep understanding of the specific asset classes traded, such as digital assets or event/prediction markets.
โ— CFTC Environment: 3โ€“7 years of experience within a CFTC-regulated entity (DCM, DCO, SEF, or FCM).
โ— Platform Expertise: Direct, hands-on experience using Eventus (Validus) for trade surveillance is mandatory.
โ— Technical Proficiency: Familiarity with Scilla (for smart contract/technical monitoring) and a strong comfort level with data-heavy environments.ย
โ— Tech-Savvy Mindset: You should be a "digitally native" professional who prefers automated workflows over manual spreadsheets. Familiarity with SQL or basic data visualization is a major plus. AI expertise is a must.
โ— US Regulatory Knowledge: Deep familiarity with the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) and core CFTC compliance principles.
โ— Certifications: Professional certifications Series 3 is highly preferred.
The starting base salary for this role is dependent on experience. This position is also eligible for an annual bonus and equity.
