Job description

The ServSafe Vocational Instructor provides high-quality vocational training in food safety and culinary fundamentals to youth in Connecticutโ€™s juvenile justice residential programs. This part-time role focuses on delivering ServSafe Food Handler and ServSafe Manager certification courses, preparing students for meaningful employment in the food service and hospitality industries. The instructor will work on-site at facilities across the state, offering engaging, trauma-informed instruction that promotes both certification achievement and workforce readiness.


Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver ServSafe Food Handlerย and Food Protection Managerย courses in alignment with National Restaurant Association standards.
  • Order, distribute, and track ServSafe workbooks, exams, and certification results.
  • Provide structured, hands-on instruction in safe food handling, sanitation, and basic kitchen practices.
  • Design lesson activities that reinforce vocational skills, social-emotional growth, and employability.
  • Mentor and support youth in developing workforce readiness skills such as punctuality, communication, and teamwork.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and certification records; submit reports to the YJES Director.
  • Travel to designated juvenile justice residential sites to deliver instruction on a weekly schedule.

Current ServSafe Instructor and Registered Proctor certificationย (required).

Experience in food service management, culinary arts instruction, or vocational training (required).

Experience working with at-risk or justice-involved youth (preferred).

Ability to use trauma-informed, culturally responsive teaching methods.

Strong organizational and communication skills.

Valid driverโ€™s license and ability to travel to multiple sites across Connecticut.
