Job description

Welcome to the Agentic Commerce Era
At Commerce, our mission is to empower businesses to innovate, grow, and thrive with our open, AI-driven commerce ecosystem. As the parent company of BigCommerce, Feedonomics, and Makeswift, we connect the tools and systems that power growth, enabling businesses to unlock the full potential of their data, deliver seamless and personalized experiences across every channel, and adapt swiftly to an ever-changing market. We believe in harnessing AI responsibly to unlock new possibilities, and we're looking for individuals who use it intentionally to solve problems, accelerate outcomes, and expand what's possible in their role. Our purpose is to help businesses confidently solve complex commerce challenges so they can build smarter, adapt faster, and grow on their own terms. If you want to be part of a team of bold builders, sharp thinkers, and technical trailblazers who shape the future of commerce, this is the place for you.
We're looking for a forward-thinking SEO/AEO/GEO Manager to lead our organic search and AI visibility strategy. This role sits at the intersection of traditional search optimization and the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-generated answers and generative engine results. You'll own our keyword and AI prompt research, drive content strategy, manage contractors and agency partners, and use AI-powered tools daily to work smarter and faster. If you thrive in ambiguity, love being an early mover, and have a strong instinct for where search is heading, this role was built for you.
What You'll Do
Search & AI Visibility Strategy
  • Own keyword research and AI prompt research - identifying not just what people search for, but how they phrase queries to AI assistants and large language models.
  • Develop and execute strategies to improve BigCommerce's presence in AI-generated answers, featured snippets, and generative engine results (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, etc.).
  • Stay current on best practices for AEO and GEO, translating emerging trends into actionable on-site and content recommendations.
  • Conduct regular site audits using Screaming Frog and other tools to identify technical SEO issues and opportunities for AI-readability improvements (structured data, heading hierarchy, clean HTML/markdown output).

Content Strategy & Blog Program
  • Lead the blog and SEO content strategy, including editorial planning, content brief creation, and performance measurement.
  • Partner with writers and content teams to produce high-quality articles optimized for both traditional search and AI citation.
  • Identify and champion opportunities to develop proprietary research and data assets - original surveys, industry studies, and statistics hubs - that earn organic links and AI citations.
  • Use Clearscope and Claude AI to develop detailed content briefs that give writers a clear roadmap for search-intent-aligned content.

AI-Powered Workflow & Analysis
  • Leverage AI tools including Claude AI and Gemini as core parts of your daily workflow - for data analysis, content brief generation, competitive research, reporting, and identifying optimization opportunities.
  • Build and refine prompt-based workflows that increase team output and quality without sacrificing strategic rigor.
  • Analyze organic performance data using Google Search Console, GA4, Amplitude, and SEMrush, synthesizing insights into clear recommendations for stakeholders.

Link Building & Off-Page SEO
  • Manage and evaluate external link building contractors and agency relationships, including quality control, performance tracking, and budget stewardship.
  • Develop link acquisition strategies that complement content initiatives, including data-driven outreach, digital PR, and strategic partnerships.
  • Maintain oversight of link tracking and ensure acquired links meet quality and relevance standards.

Contractor & Vendor Management
  • Manage day-to-day relationships with SEO contractors and agency partners, including scope oversight, deliverable review, and renewal decisions.
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders (content, dev, design, web strategy) to ensure SEO and AEO recommendations are understood and implemented.
  • Own tool renewals, licenses, and vendor relationships for the SEO tech stack.

Who You Are
  • 5+ years of experience in SEO, with demonstrated results in organic traffic growth and search performance.
  • Hands-on experience with AI search optimization (AEO/GEO) - or a strong, documented understanding of how AI-generated answers work and a clear track record of adapting quickly to new search paradigms.
  • Fluency with the SEO and analytics tool stack: SEMrush, Google Search Console, Screaming Frog, Clearscope, Scrunch, GA4, and/or Amplitude.
  • Comfortable using AI tools - Claude, Gemini, or similar - as genuine productivity multipliers, not novelties. You use them to analyze data, build briefs, and accelerate research.
  • Strong content strategy instincts, with experience directing a blog or editorial program and measurable SEO outcomes to show for it.
  • Experience managing contractors, agencies, or direct reports, with the organizational discipline to keep multiple workstreams on track.
  • Solid understanding of link building strategies and the ability to evaluate link quality and vendor performance.
  • Analytical mindset with the ability to translate data into a clear narrative for non-SEO stakeholders.
  • Strategic thinker who stays hands-on - you can zoom out to set direction and zoom back in to execute, always focused on what actually drives results.
  • Proven ability to navigate competing priorities and align stakeholders, keeping SEO/AEO projects moving from brief to live without losing momentum.
  • Bonus: Experience designing or executing proprietary research initiatives (surveys, industry data, statistics hubs) to generate linkable, citable assets.
