What are some common challenges faced by search engine optimization managers, and how can they be addressed?

Search Engine Optimization Managers often encounter challenges such as keeping up with frequent algorithm updates, measuring the true impact of SEO efforts, and aligning strategies across different departments. Staying informed through industry news and continuous learning is key to adapting to search engine changes. Collaborating closely with content, web development, and marketing teams helps ensure alignment and maximizes SEO effectiveness. Utilizing analytics tools and setting clear KPIs can also aid in tracking progress and demonstrating ROI to stakeholders.

What does a search engine optimization manager do?

As a search engine optimization manager, your primary duties are to develop and implement a company’s SEO strategy. You work with marketing and sales managers to determine the goals of your company and then direct your department to carry out tactics to meet those goals. These tactics include creating web-optimized content for a website, developing a corpus of keywords that drive traffic to the website, developing social media campaign strategies, and improving the performance of search engine results. You also help hire and train new writers and content developers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a search engine optimization manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Manager, you need a deep understanding of SEO strategies, keyword research, analytics, and content optimization, often supported by a degree in marketing or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Google Analytics, SEMrush, Ahrefs, and certifications like Google Analytics or HubSpot SEO are typically required. Strong analytical thinking, communication, and project management skills help SEO Managers collaborate effectively and adapt to algorithm changes. These abilities are crucial for driving organic traffic, improving website rankings, and achieving business growth through search visibility.

In this role, you'll blend technical SEO expertise with strong content, prompt, and analytics skills to optimize websites endtoend, from audits and keyword/prompt research to onpage execution and performance insights. You'll experiment with generative search platforms, turn data into clear recommendations, and collaborate closely with clients and internal teams to drive measurable impact and shape the future of Saatchi & Saatchi's search practice.Responsibilities
  • Strategy development: Creation and execution of comprehensive SEO and GEO strategies that drive organic traffic, visibility, and performance across traditional and generative search environments. overseeing kickoff, execution, QA, launch, and post-launch analysis, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met.

  • Performance analysis: Analyze analytics, search console data, AI search visibility tools, and behavioural signals to identify trends, inform strategy, and create performance-driven recommendations and provide reporting capabilities.
  • Client collaboration: Support client communication across performance updates, strategy evolution, and opportunity discovery. Proactively surface risks, anticipate challenges, and recommend solutions.
  • AI search experimentation: Test emerging AI search experiences (e.g. ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity etc.), evaluate generative answer patterns, and develop internal POVs and best practices.
  • Innovation & knowledge sharing: Consistently monitor industry trends, share insights with the team, contribute to internal training materials, and help strengthen Saatchi & Saatchi's search practice.
  • Collaboration & communication: Work with cross-disciplinary stakeholders and external partners to ensure SEO, GEO, and content recommendations are implemented effectively and support broader marketing objectives.
Qualifications
  • Experience: 3-5 years of hands-on SEO experience, ideally within an agency or enterprise environment. Experience working with AI-driven search ecosystems is considered an asset.
  • Technical skills: Proficiency with GSC, GA4, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, and familiarity with AI-assisted SEO tools.
  • GEO & AI search knowledge: Understanding of Generative Engine Optimization, AI answer-generation patterns, structured data for AEO, and how LLMs consume and surface content.

  • Presentation & communication: Skilled at creating executive-ready decks, presenting complex technical concepts clearly, and guiding clients/stakeholders through SEO/GEO recommendations.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable operating in a fast-evolving search landscape; quick to adopt new methods, tools, and AI-driven capabilities.
