How much do scouting jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for scouting in the United States is $16.71, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.38 and $18.27 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is scouting?

Scouting is the process of identifying and evaluating talent, typically for sports teams, organizations, or entertainment agencies. Scouts observe athletes, performers, or potential recruits to assess their skills, potential, and suitability for a particular team or role. The goal is to find promising individuals who can contribute to the success of the organization. Scouting often involves travel, attending events, and extensive research to make informed recommendations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a scout?

To thrive as a Scout, you need strong analytical skills, deep knowledge of the sport or field, and relevant educational or training background. Experience with scouting software, video analysis tools, and data management systems is typically required. Exceptional communication, keen observation, and networking abilities help Scouts build relationships and assess talent effectively. These skills enable Scouts to identify promising prospects and provide accurate evaluations, which are crucial for team success.

What are some common challenges faced by scouts when evaluating talent, and how can they be addressed?

Scouts often face the challenge of identifying potential in athletes who may not have fully developed skills or consistent performance records. Time constraints, limited access to live games, and varying levels of competition can make accurate assessment difficult. To address these challenges, scouts rely on a combination of data analysis, video reviews, and in-person observations, as well as collaborating with coaches and other scouts to gain a well-rounded perspective. Staying adaptable and continuously updating evaluation methods also help scouts remain effective in finding promising talent.

What is the difference between Scouting vs Recruiter?

AspectScoutingRecruiter
CredentialsOften no formal certification, but industry knowledge helpfulTypically requires HR or recruiting certifications
Work EnvironmentProactively searches for talent, often in the field or onlineManages the hiring process, interviews, and candidate screening
Industry UsageCommon in sports, entertainment, and specialized fieldsWidely used across all industries for hiring

While both roles focus on talent acquisition, scouting primarily involves proactively identifying potential candidates or talent sources, often without direct hiring authority. Recruiters handle the entire hiring process, from sourcing to onboarding. Understanding these differences helps organizations choose the right approach for their hiring needs.

Job description

Position Summary

The New Birth of Freedom Council seeks a passionate leader to expand access to Scouting for youth in the City of York, Pennsylvania. This field-based position leads Urban Scouting programs by recruiting and developing staff, building strong community partnerships, engaging families, and delivering safe, high-quality experiences that help young people grow. Scouting experience is welcome but not required.

This is an opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people while helping expand Scouting's reach in one of our most important communities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead quality Scouting programs, advancement, camping, outdoor experiences, and special events.
  • Maintain program quality through regular site visits and staff coaching.
  • Recruit youth and expand programs through schools and community partnerships.
  • Build relationships with families, schools, churches, housing communities, and community organizations.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, coach, and recognize Program Specialists.
  • Manage budgets, supplies, transportation, registrations, records, and grant reporting.
  • Monitor participation, retention, and program outcomes and recommend improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with Safeguarding Youth policies and Council standards.
  • Serve as staff advisor to the Urban Scouting Committee.
  • Represent the Council professionally throughout the community.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated commitment to helping young people succeed.
  • Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, and organizational skills.
  • Age 21+, valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Flexible schedule including some evenings/weekends.
  • Experience in education, recreation, youth development, or community programs preferred; Scouting experience helpful but not required.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to obtain required clearances and Scouting membership.

Working Conditions

This field-based position requires regular travel throughout the City of York and periodic travel to Council camps, activities, and other locations. Most Urban Scouting programs are held after school. The position requires flexibility for occasional evening and weekend responsibilities related to community events, camping experiences, special activities, and other program needs.

The position requires the ability to lift, carry, and transport program supplies and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and to participate in outdoor and camping activities.

Mission Impact

Success in this position is measured by far more than enrolling youth.  It means providing consistent, high-quality programs led by capable, caring adults; keeping young people engaged; recognizing their achievements; connecting them with camping, outdoor experiences, and other Scouting opportunities; and building lasting relationships with families and community partners that strengthen their participation.

Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $40,000 annually plus a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, a 403(b) retirement plan, paid vacation, and holidays.

If you believe every young person deserves the opportunity to discover their potential through Scouting, we'd love to hear from you. Please submit your resume to brian.debease@scouting.org
