As of Aug 14, 2026, the average yearly pay for sales development representative in Oregon is $58,169.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $44,400.00 and $64,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges sales development representatives face when qualifying leads, and how can they overcome them?

Sales Development Representatives (SDRs) often encounter challenges such as reaching decision-makers, handling objections, and distinguishing qualified prospects from uninterested contacts. To overcome these hurdles, successful SDRs use targeted research to personalize outreach, employ effective questioning to identify pain points, and listen actively to address concerns. Regular collaboration with account executives and marketing teams also helps refine lead qualification criteria, ensuring SDRs focus their efforts on the most promising opportunities.

What does a sales development representative do?

Sales development representatives seek sales leads through marketing on social media, email, and phone calls. As a sales development representative, you determine if a sales lead has a good chance of purchasing the product or service you are marketing before sending that lead to a sales closer. This process allows salespeople to focus on closing the deal instead of prospecting. You speak with main buyers at companies or with prospective buyers who contact you after seeing your marketing materials, and you discuss their needs to see if your product is a good fit for their overall goals. Many sales development reps have a degree in business, marketing, or a related field. Others enter the role without formal education but with several years of experience in sales or marketing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales development representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Development Representative, you need strong communication, prospecting, and lead qualification skills, typically supported by a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with CRM systems like Salesforce, email outreach tools, and sales enablement platforms is usually required. Persistence, active listening, and resilience are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are essential for effectively identifying prospects, nurturing leads, and driving revenue growth in a competitive sales environment.

Is a sales development representative entry level?

A sales development representative (SDR) is often an entry-level role focused on prospecting and qualifying leads. It typically requires strong communication skills and may serve as a stepping stone to more advanced sales positions, with many companies offering on-the-job training. Prior experience is not always necessary, making it accessible for recent graduates or those new to sales.

Do sales development representatives make good money?

Sales development representatives (SDRs) typically earn a base salary plus commissions or bonuses based on sales performance. The total compensation can vary widely depending on the industry, location, and individual success, with many SDRs earning a competitive income that can increase with experience and skill development.

How you'll make a huge impact here - and on your career:

This is your chance to step into the competitive and lucrative world of technology sales. Here, you'll get experience selling to senior level execs in finance across a wide array of industries. And you'll do that across North America. You'll be mentored by other Versapay salespeople who have a ton of experience - you could literally be working with someone with 5 - 15+ years of crushing quotas at some of the world's leading tech companies.
What you'll do:
  • Being the first point of contact for Versapay in the customer value journey.  Qualifying contacted customers for continued engagement with our sales teams. Evaluating their clear understanding of the problems we solve and their readiness to address these issues.
  • Proactively prospect new potential customers through phone, email and social media outlets, with the goal of making contact and creating interest in Versapay, with a target of scheduling deeper discovery calls for the sales team.
  • Join a team that is invested in your future. We'll provide training and work with you on building out your career path here. You will have exposure to learning about and working with teams across the business, including but not limited to Sales, Customer Success, Partnerships, Enablement and Marketing.
  • By researching accounts, contacts, key players, etc. you're not only able to generate and stimulate buying interest with lead nurturing, emails and building collateral/assets to share, but successfully manage and overcome objections.
  • Document your success in Salesforce Lightning CRM and ensure data in marketing automation is complete and up to date.
  • Learn, teach others and advance within the sales organization, first by building pipeline and gaining exposure to all aspects of a sales cycle, working together to improve lead quality, collab on best practices and hone your craft.
  • Work in lockstep with the marketing team and support lead gen programs from pre-program planning to data entry and post follow-up and tracking. And when possible, helping with tradeshow/event logistics and support.
  • Contribute to our awesome culture! Make Versapay a great place to learn, grow and accelerate careers! Your voice matters and we always test and try before we go all in on the Sales team.

What you'll bring to the team:
  • 2-5 years of experience in a BDR/SDR or equivalent sales role
  • You have a proven track record of generating an outbound pipeline from scratch. Cold calls, cold emails, social selling, and creative prospecting are second nature to you, not afterthoughts.
  • You're a skilled multi-threader. You instinctively engage multiple stakeholders across an account simultaneously, mapping buying committees and building champions at every level of an organization.
  • You've consistently hit or exceeded outbound-specific metrics, reaching 90%+ quota attainment. Whether that's meetings booked, pipeline generated, or sequences launched, you've got the numbers to back it up.
  • You're naturally curious and confident. You ask sharp questions, listen actively, and know how to tailor your message to different personas, from a CFO to a Head of Procurement.
  • You have strong business acumen and understand that every prospect has a unique problem. You listen, discern, and connect the dots between their pain and our solution.
  • You bring great energy that people gravitate toward, with strong written and verbal communication skills that cut through the noise in a crowded inbox or on a cold call.
  • You have a bias toward action. You don't wait for inbound, you go find the pipeline yourself.
  • You thrive in fast-moving, evolving environments and adapt your approach without losing momentum.
  • You're collaborative and coachable. You'll partner closely with AEs on account and territory planning and raise the bar for the SDRs around you.
  • You're proficient with sales tools like Gong, Salesforce, or Sales Navigator and know how to build and optimize sequences that actually convert.
  • Bonus: Experience selling into the office of the CFO is a big plus. You understand the compliance considerations, buying cycles, and stakeholder complexity that come with the territory.
$50,000 - $55,000 a year
Can earn up to 85K USD OTE
