What is a recruiter?

Recruiters are professionals who help organizations find and hire suitable candidates for job openings. They may work internally within a company's human resources department or externally for staffing agencies. Recruiters source candidates, review resumes, conduct interviews, and coordinate the hiring process. Their goal is to match qualified individuals with roles that fit their skills and the employer's needs. Effective recruiters build strong networks and maintain relationships with both employers and job seekers.

What do recruiters do?

The primary role of a recruiter is to match job seekers with job vacancies based on a candidate’s credentials and a company’s needs. A recruiter seeks out qualified candidates, then serves as a liaison between the candidate and the company to meet the demands of both parties regarding job duties and compensation. Recruiters save companies time by weeding out unqualified or unfit job seekers, and they help job seekers by connecting them with opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a recruiter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Recruiter, strong interpersonal skills, knowledge of talent acquisition strategies, and a background in human resources or business are essential, often supported by a bachelor’s degree. Familiarity with applicant tracking systems (ATS), sourcing platforms like LinkedIn Recruiter, and HR certifications such as SHRM or PHR are commonly required. Excellent communication, active listening, and relationship-building abilities help recruiters stand out in engaging both clients and candidates. These skills are crucial for matching the right talent to organizational needs and ensuring a smooth hiring process.

What are some common challenges recruiters face when sourcing candidates, and how can they overcome them?

Recruiters often face challenges such as finding qualified candidates for hard-to-fill roles, standing out to top talent in a competitive market, and managing a high volume of applications efficiently. To overcome these hurdles, recruiters leverage creative sourcing strategies, utilize advanced applicant tracking systems, and build strong employer branding to attract passive candidates. Additionally, maintaining clear communication with hiring managers and regularly updating sourcing techniques can help ensure a smoother recruitment process.

The Outreach Team is a field firm specializing in face-to-face canvassing operations. We work on behalf of amazing progressive partners to win important campaigns and make lasting social change. Our goal is to consistently raise the overall level of campaign work across platforms by thinking holistically about our staff, campaigns, and clients. In the last two campaign cycles, we've knocked on 4 million doors across more than a dozen states, registered over 100,000 voters, provided quality control services for 1.5 million voter registrations, and qualified a half dozen ballot initiatives.
The Role
We are currently seeking Recruiters to join our team. The recruitment team's goal is to build energetic and effective teams who will motivate communities to get involved in our democracy and the issues that matter to them. The recruitment team oversees full-cycle recruitment and plays a crucial role in finding, hiring, and onboarding the right people for this vital work. If you are a people person who is passionate about progressive politics and has an eye for detail - join our team!
Location: This a hybrid role, with 40% being remote and 60% being in-person. Staff need to be located in, or within reasonable commuting distance, to Lincoln, or Omaha, NE.
What you'll do:
Recruiters are assigned different tasks based on skills and experience. As a Recruiter, you should expect to do any combination of these tasks, but not all of them consistently:
Interview, Evaluate, and Hire Staff
  • Use our internal tracking systems to screen candidate applications and schedule them for interviews
  • Host multiple group interview sessions each day via Zoom
  • Set a strong and professional first impression of The Outreach Team, and get candidates excited for the opportunity to work with us

Carry Out Full-Cycle Recruitment
  • Participate in recruitment tasks throughout the entire hiring process, from application generation to onboarding new staff.
  • Create and post job ads
  • Design flyers and other materials for in-person recruitment needs
  • Call applicants and other leads to pitch the job and move them through the hiring process
  • Work within our onboarding systems to ensure that tax forms are complete and in compliance with all state and federal laws.
  • Follow up with new hires and provide support as they navigate the onboarding process

Hit Hiring Goals for Projects Across the Country
  • Develop ad strategies to meet hiring needs and manage day-to-day progress
  • Ensure the recruitment cycle is running smoothly and candidates are moving forward in a timely manner.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of ad content and recruitment funnel rates and report any issues found

Be Flexible
  • The recruitment team is a supportive team, and recruitment members work on multiple projects including candidate sourcing, interviewing, onboarding, and other administrative tasks as needed.
  • Move from one recruitment task to another with relative ease and efficiency as priorities shift.
  • Go out into communities to network, meet with college students at schools, attend job fairs and rallies. All to find and recruit more campaign staff.

Who you are
  • Have some experience in recruiting and hiring (or are a systems-based, people person who is willing and excited to learn)
  • Have a passion for progressive policies
  • Are a self-starter with excellent problem-solving skills
  • Enjoy a fun, fast-paced work environment and are flexible with changing priorities.
  • Have access to a computer and reliable internet, with strong tech competency, and interest in learning new systems.
  • Are willing to work occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Have experience working on campaigns (this is a big plus, but not required)
  • Spanish/English Bilingual (also a plus, but not required)

Pay, Hours & Benefits
Pay is $20/hr for Recruiters and $22/hr for Team Leads. Recruiters who are Spanish/English bilingual will earn an additional $1/hr. Beyond pay, we do offer a generous benefits package, including paid sick leave, health insurance, and a (virtual) classroom-style training. At the end of the campaign cycle, there may be opportunities for advancement.
The core shifts offered are Mon- Fri, 12 pm -8 pm EST. We also have a handful of morning, evening, and weekend shifts offered periodically. We expect to offer these core hours consistently, but our work ebbs and flows, and the available hours may change as new campaigns start and others end. We will give at least a 2-week notice for any shift changes.
At The Outreach Team, we prioritize equity and inclusion. We are an equal opportunity employer and we strongly encourage Black, indigenous, people of color, women, people with previous felony convictions, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and others who identify with underrepresented groups to apply.
