Description
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs a variety of duties in the routing and distribution of mail for the county government.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Responsible for the pickup, sorting, processing, and distribution of all in-coming and outgoing county mail, both intra-office and via U.S. Postal Service for assigned county departments. Maintains and operates postal equipment and meters as well as maintaining records of postal usage. Picks up and delivers supplies and packages to assigned county departments. Decisions require selecting the most appropriate and cost effective delivery method, and determining disposition of improperly addressed mail. Employees assigned to one of two driving or one walking mail delivery routes. Responsible for routine daily maintenance checks of gas, oil, water, etc. for assigned county vehicle. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Building Operations Manager and is reviewed periodically for adherence to departmental policies and by overall efficiency of the mail distribution system.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

โ€ข Sort incoming mail by departments and delivers and picks up mail from all county departments on a scheduled basis.
โ€ข Sorts the mail that is picked up from the U.S. Postal Service.
โ€ข Picks up and delivers Greensboro Clerk of Court's suitcases to transport court documents to the High Point Courts.
โ€ข Operates electronic scales for weighing mail and uses Pitney Bowes or other postal meters to stamp mail.
RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

โ€ข Working knowledge of county mail procedures, operations, equipment, and schedules.
โ€ข Ability to learn federal postal guidelines and procedures such as weight classes, postal rates, postal zones and zone rates for excess weights.
โ€ข Ability to maintain effective working relationships with various departments of county government.
โ€ข Physical strength sufficient to handle heavy packages up to 50 pounds, supplies, and mail bags.
โ€ข Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
โ€ข Ability to read and write.

High school graduation or equivalent and any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements
  • Must have a valid North Carolina driver's license.
  • Subject to overtime, calls back to work for urgent/emergency situations and work during inclement weather.

Driving is Essential
Driving is an essential requirement of this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
