Job description

Temple Health is seeking a Director of Legal Operations to serve in Temple Health's Legal Department. Reporting to Temple Health's EVP/Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel, and working closely with the General Counsel of Fox Chase Cancer Center and other senior leaders in Temple Health's Legal Department, the Director of Legal Operations will be responsible for driving Temple Health's efforts to enhance legal operational efficiency and business processes for the Legal Department.
This position is five days per week onsite at Chestnut Hill Hospital.
The successful candidate in this role will combine their significant legal, operational, administrative, financial, and project management expertise with a mastery of the technology platforms used by the Legal Department. This position will work closely with lawyers and professionals across the Legal Department as well as business partners in Finance, IT, HR, Business Development and other colleagues across the organization.
Responsibilities
Legal Department Operations
  • Provide support to the General Counsel and senior members of the Legal Department on operational and strategic aspects of running the Legal Department
  • Work with other members of the Legal Department to develop process improvements and reports leading to transparency, cost reductions and other efficiencies
  • Use data-centric metrics and analytics designed to develop strategy and maximize resources and performance
  • Provide guidance and advice across the organization as a member of multi-disciplinary project teams

Legal Department Technology Platforms
  • Mastery and ownership of all legal operations technology platforms including Ironclad, Brightflag, NetDocuments, OpenText, RMF and Boardvantage, including troubleshooting, developing and leading training and being the dedicated resource for department lawyers for all technology and data issues
  • Drive adoption across the whole department of tools, software, and process improvements
  • Create and lead training sessions for users across the organization, and develop and maintain a library of written training materials for the Legal Department's platforms
  • Select and implement new technology platforms across the Legal Departmant
  • Manage subscriptions and department-wide applications

Outside Counsel Management and Metrics
  • Provide support on our advanced outside counsel management program to harmonize the engagement and performance of our external legal resources
  • Optimize and enhance the use of legal spend management and matter management technology, including harmonization of internal business process management and tools to enhance efficiency, decision making and reduce costs
  • Work with internal counsel, external law firms and benchmarking data to manage outside counsel performance and spend
  • Develop and implement alternate fee arrangements, as appropriate

Financial Management
  • Serve as Legal Department's primary liaison with the TUHS's Finance Department for Legal budgets
  • Partner closely with Finance business partners to manage budgeting, forecasting and budget variance analysis for the Legal Department
  • Work closely with the General Counsel of Fox Chase Cancer Center to meet budget targets for the prosecution and maintenance of Fox Chase's patent portfolio
  • Support and guide strategic short-term and long-term projects focused on efficient use of internal and external legal resources
  • Gather, maintain and provide relevant departmental data and reports

Department Administration
  • Provide administrative leadership for the Legal Department, including planning and organizing department meetings
  • Provide general leadership and support across the global department to promote strong internal departmental communications, strong team performance and team member well-being
  • Act as office manager/chief of staff to the GC; implement and sustain department culture so lawyers can focus on legal work
  • Create and maintain a Legal Department knowledge hub to manage information sharing between practice areas

HR and Integration
  • Serve as the Legal Department's point person with the organization's Human Resources Department on all hiring efforts
  • Develop and maintain a department-wide program for standardized onboarding, training and professional development opportunities
  • Lead the Legal Department's Summer Associate and Internship programs, including hiring, training, supervising, assignment tracking, and development opportunities

Required Experience and Competencies
  • At least 5 years of relevant legal administrative and/or operations experience within a large, in-house legal department, large, sophisticated law firm or other professional legal environment. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience as a practicing attorney or equivalent operational, technology, and business leadership experience in a professional legal environment.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent is required.
  • JD, MBA, or Master's degree in an accounting, financial, operations, administration, or project management discipline is preferred.
  • A solid combination of operational, financial, and business acumen and a demonstrated ability to utilize data, metrics and analytics to design, implement and manage process improvements, personnel optimization and administrative and operational efficiency. High technical aptitude with demonstrated ability to independently learn and administer enterprise software platforms
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a change agent.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively across all levels of a complex, multi-functional teams.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to build relationships within department and across all members of the company.
  • Self-starter willing to both handle and manage assigned projects and tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail and facility with data, numbers and financial tools.
