Amazon is building the next generation software, hardware, and processes to run our state-of-the-art global fulfillment network that moves many millions of units of inventory, ensuring that customers get what they want when promised. We are constantly innovating in the ways we are automating and accelerating the delivery of packages which includes custom robotics, mechatronics, conveyance, supply chain optimization, machine learning, manipulation, image processing, and real-time data processing using distributed systems.

We are looking for a System Development Manager with a passion for creating a step function change in an established domain by leveraging controls software development skills. You will guide a team of talented engineers to transform the way we develop and integrate controls applications for MHE systems within our global network of advanced warehouses. This position is a unique opportunity to be involved in a wide range of automation projects right from the start. You will work with multiple internal Amazon R&D and design teams as well as automation strategic partners who have the technology and resources to meet Amazon’s growth needs on a global scale.

This role is in a newly established team which will create edge compute solutions for industrial automation applications. It is an early-stage initiative with a fast paced, start-up like environment inside Amazon, so to be successful you need to be flexible and entrepreneurial. You are a true owner - you are hands on and you set the example. You and your team will be working on all the aspects of the development cycle including scoping, design, implementation, testing, and delivery of your product. This is a unique opportunity to define real time and deterministic edge-based solutions where the cloud meets the real world in the heart of our fulfillment centers. The ideal candidate will enjoy working at multiple layers of the stack from edge compute solutions and cloud-based solutions to interface with and manage fleets of real-world devices.

Basic Qualifications
  • 3+ years of managing system or software development teams experience
  • Experience in agile software development methodology
  • Experience coordinating between technical teams, peers and business stakeholders
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or an equivalent engineering science
  • 5+ years of control system working experience in PLC and Soft PLC-based controls design, development, implementation and support
  • 5+ years machine control code development experience in IEC 61131-3 languages including structured text and/or ladder-logic
  • Experience in industrial fieldbus and protocols: Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, ProfiNET, TCP/IP, MQTT, OPC-UA
  • Experience with industrial automation safety design and programming per IEC 61508 or ISO 13849
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering & best practices for full software development life cycle, including coding standards, software architectures, code reviews, source control management, continuous deployments, testing, and operational excellence
  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby
  • Experience in creating process improvements with automation and analysis, or experience working with stakeholders
  • Master's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or Master's degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics or equivalent
  • Experience with HMI design and development

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
