Job description

Millwork Designer & Fabricator
Entry Level to Experienced
Location: South End, Charlotte, NC.
Pay: $15 to $35 per hour, depending on experience, skill level, and long-term potential.
Construction Theory is looking for a creative, hands-on Millwork Designer & Fabricator to join our custom shop in South End, Charlotte.
This position can be a great fit for someone who is just getting into the industry and wants to learn, or for an experienced millwork professional who can step in and help design, build, and fabricate high-end custom work.
Our projects range from small custom millwork pieces to full, complex custom builds. We work with a wide variety of materials including wood, metal, glass, leather, acrylics, and other specialty finishes. This is not repetitive production work. We build unique pieces for commercial and residential projects, and the work often requires creativity, problem solving, and attention to detail.
Position Overview:

We are open to hiring at different experience levels.
For an entry-level candidate, we are looking for someone with strong computer design skills, a good attitude, and an interest in learning the millwork and fabrication industry. The right person will be trained to move from screen to machine, helping with design, shop fabrication, and field installation.
For an experienced candidate, we are looking for someone who already understands millwork, fabrication, cabinet building, shop tools, and installation. Computer design skills are a major plus, but not required for every experienced applicant.
For the top pay range, the ideal candidate would be able to handle both computer design and fabrication with little to no supervision.
Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include:
  • Designing custom millwork, cabinetry, displays, furniture, and specialty pieces.
  • Creating drawings, layouts, cut files, and shop-ready details.
  • Learning or operating CNC, shop equipment, and fabrication tools.
  • Fabricating custom pieces using wood, metal, acrylic, glass, leather, and specialty materials.
  • Assisting with assembly, finishing, and installation.
  • Working in both the shop and field on custom projects.
  • Reading plans, sketches, measurements, and design concepts.
  • Helping turn creative ideas into buildable finished products.
  • Maintaining a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
  • Problem solving during design, fabrication, and installation.
Entry-Level Qualifications:

Entry-level candidates do not need millwork experience, but should have:
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Interest in design, fabrication, construction, or custom building.
  • Ability to learn design software and shop equipment.
  • Good attention to detail.
  • Willingness to work in both the shop and field.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Strong work ethic and desire to grow in the industry.
  • Interest in learning how to take a project from computer design to finished product.
Experience with design software, CNC, woodworking, construction, drafting, 3D modeling, or fabrication is helpful but not required.
Experienced Qualifications:

Experienced candidates should have some combination of:
  • Millwork, cabinetry, casework, furniture, or custom fabrication experience.
  • Ability to read drawings, plans, and shop details.
  • Experience with shop tools, saws, routers, sanders, assembly, and installation.
  • Knowledge of cabinet construction, materials, hardware, and finishing.
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems.
  • Field installation experience.
  • Experience with CNC or digital fabrication is a plus.
  • Computer design skills are a strong plus.
Ideal High-Level Candidate:

The ideal candidate at the higher end of the pay range would be able to:
  • Design custom millwork on a computer.
  • Create buildable drawings and machine-ready files.
  • Fabricate custom pieces with minimal supervision.
  • Understand materials, hardware, joinery, and installation requirements.
  • Move a project from concept to completed product.
  • Work independently while maintaining high quality standards.
What We Offer:
  • Pay from $15 to $35 per hour, based on experience and ability.
  • Opportunity to work on creative, custom, high-end projects.
  • Hands-on training for the right entry-level candidate.
  • Shop and field experience.
  • A chance to learn design, CNC, fabrication, and installation.
  • Variety of work using wood, metal, glass, leather, acrylics, and specialty materials.
  • Small team environment with room to grow.

We are looking for someone who wants to build cool things, learn new skills, and be part of a creative construction and fabrication environment.
How to Apply:

Please send your resume, work history, portfolio, project photos, or examples of design/fabrication work if available.
