They are responsible for setting technical direction, establishing development processes, and aligning projects with business goals. AspectDirector Software DevelopmentSoftware Engineering Manager

The main difference is that the Director Software Development focuses on strategic leadership and overseeing multiple teams, while the Software Engineering Manager concentrates on managing individual teams and project execution. Balancing these areas requires strong delegation skills, setting clear goals and expectations, and maintaining open communication channels. Many directors find success by empowering technical leads to own day-to-day technical decisions, allowing them to focus on strategic planning, cross-functional alignment, and organizational growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Director of Software Development, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Director of Software Development, you need extensive experience in software engineering, leadership, project management, and a relevant technical degree. Strong communication, strategic thinking, and team-building skills help drive cross-functional alignment and motivate high-performing teams. These skills are essential for delivering successful software products, managing complex projects, and fostering innovation within the organization.

From the beginning, Starbucks set out to be a different kind of company. One that not only celebrated coffee and the rich tradition, but that also brought a feeling of connection. We are known for developing extraordinary leaders who share this passion and are guided by their service to others.

As a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET), you will play a critical role in advancing test automation capabilities and ensuring high-quality software delivery across systems and applications. You will design, develop, and sustain scalable automation frameworks while guiding teams on best practices across the software development lifecycle.

As a Sr SDET, you will:

  • Execute and analyze testing – Develop, maintain, and debug automated test scripts while tracking and communicating execution results
  • Evaluate tools and frameworks – Participate in tool selection, create POCs, and recommend automation solutions
  • Collaborate across teams – Work cross-functionally with engineers, analysts, and project managers to deliver high-quality software
We’d love to hear from people with:
  • 5+ years of experience designing and developing automation frameworks with strong programming and scripting skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Strong coding experience with object-oriented programming and design patterns
  • Experience with automation tools and frameworks (open-source or commercial)
  • Knowledge of SDLC, Agile methodologies, and test management practices
  • Experience with version control systems and defect tracking tools
  • Understanding of cloud technologies (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS) and system architecture concepts
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

As a Starbucks partner, you (and your family) will have access to medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, and other voluntary insurance benefits. Partners have access to short-term and long-term disability, paid parental leave, family expansion reimbursement, paid vacation from date of hire*, sick time (accrued at 1 hour for every 25 hours worked), eight paid holidays, and two personal days per year. Starbucks also offers eligible partners participation in a 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, a discounted company stock program (S.I.P.), Starbucks equity program (Bean Stock), incentivized emergency savings, and financial well-being tools. Additionally, Starbucks offers 100% upfront tuition coverage for a first-time bachelor’s degree through Arizona State University’s online program via the Starbucks College Achievement Plan, student loan management resources, and access to other educational opportunities. You will also have access to backup care and DACA reimbursement. Starbucks will comply with any applicable state and local laws regarding employee leave benefits, including, but not limited to providing time off pursuant to the Colorado Healthy Families and Workplaces Act, and in accordance with its plans and policies. This list is subject to change depending on collective bargaining in locations where partners have a certified bargaining representative. For roles in other states, you will be granted vacation time starting at 120 hours annually for roles below director and 200 hours annually for roles director and above.

The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, and internal equity. At Starbucks, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
