The Senior Human Factors Engineer serves as the lead authority for human systems engineering, specializing in the assessment and optimization of products, processes, and workflows within complex clinical informatics environments. With a deep foundation in organizational psychology, industry best practices, and human factors research, this leader devises strategies, evaluations, and designs to maximize usability, safety, and effectiveness while minimizing negative impacts for all user groups. The Senior Human Factors Engineer orchestrates end-to-end usability analysis,ย coordinating interdisciplinary research, evaluating system and process performance, and proactivelyย identifyingย latent or transient issues that traditional workflows or unit testing may not reveal. This position actively fosters iterative feedback and continuous improvement, ensuring all humanย factorsย workย meetsย orย exceedsย industry and regulatory standards. Theyย bring extensiveย expertiseย inย SAFe Lean Agile methodologies, driving value and operational excellence through the empowerment of high-performing Agile teams and the management of HFE resources for this contract.ย

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the principal subject matter expert and lead resource for all human factors engineering work performed under this agreement. Ensure deliverables are of the highest quality and fully compliant with industry standards and customer expectations.ย 

  • Apply deep knowledge of organizational psychology, current research, and industry trends to devise strategies, conduct human-centered evaluations, and propose evidence-based designs to assess products and processes in clinical informatics and healthcare delivery.ย 

  • Lead analysis of clinical informatics workflows, aggregating policy, process, and research data toย identifyย user experience issues, risks, or failure points,ย including those often missed by standard unit testing. Recommend redesigns or process adjustments to mitigate negative impacts.ย 

  • Conduct live demonstration sessions, eliciting real-time feedback from users and stakeholders. Synthesize and communicate observations, formulate actionable suggestions, and adapt recommendations in response to user and participant engagement.ย 

  • Clearly articulate complex human factors issues both formally and informally to engineering teams, clinical leaders, and end users. Translate technical findings into practical solutions and ensure all stakeholders are informed and engaged throughout system or workflow changes.ย 

  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of all applicable HFE/human systems engineering standards and best practices. Ensure all recommendations and deliverables fully conform to required regulations and guidelines (including, but not limited to, FDA, AAMI, ISO/IEC standards as applicable).ย 

  • Leverageย SAFe Lean Agile principles to promote organizational change, empower Agile teams, and drive continuous improvement in system usability and user satisfaction. Activelyย participateย in and guide Agile ceremonies, PI planning, and retrospectives as they pertain to human factors initiatives.ย 

  • Lead quality assurance for HFE outputs,ย validatingย that all evaluations, analyses, and redesign efforts are robust, actionable, user-focused, and measurable. Direct junior human factors engineering resources to ensure contract-wide excellence.ย 

  • Stay abreast of emerging industry tools, techniques, and research in human factors engineering. Incorporate lessons learned and the latest advances to enhance future assessments, workflow improvements, and user outcomes.ย 

Minimum Requirements:
  • Master's degree in human factors engineering, organizational psychology, human systems integration, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, ergonomics, orย a closelyย related discipline.ย 

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in human factors engineering, human systems design, or a related field, with direct experience in healthcare, clinical informatics, or large-scale IT environments.ย 

  • Provenย expertiseย applying principles of organizational psychology andย state-of-the-artย human factors research to drive product and process assessment.ย 

  • Demonstrated experience inย facilitatingย live usability sessions, conducting participatory design reviews, and synthesizing participant feedback into actionable recommendations.ย 

  • In-depth familiarity withย SAFe Lean Agile methodologies, including demonstrated history of integrating human factors practices within high-performing Agile teams.ย 

  • Ability to coordinate andย leadย the analysis of aggregate clinical workflow and process performance, uncovering usability, safety, and system effectiveness issues.ย 

  • Superior oral and written communication skills; ability to distill highly technical or research findings into clear, actionable communications for multidisciplinary teams and executive leadership.ย 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of all applicable humanย factorsย standards, usability engineering processes, and relevant regulatory requirements.ย 

  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain/maintainย a federal security clearance (Public Trust or higher).ย 

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate inย HFE, systems engineering, organizational psychology, or related field.ย 

  • Board certification in human factors (e.g., Certified Human Factors Professional-CHFP).ย 

  • Experience leading HFE projects within VA, DoD, or other large federal healthcare organizations.ย 

  • Familiarity and experience with human factors in health IT platformsย utilizedย in federal healthcare (e.g., VAย VistA/CPRS, Cerner Millennium/Oracle Health, and interoperability standards like HL7 or FHIR).ย 

  • Documented contributions to the field through peer-reviewed publications or recognized presentations at relevant industry conferences.ย 

  • Advanced understanding and experience designing human-centered clinical informatics workflows for interoperability, EHR optimization, and technology-driven clinical transformation.ย 

  • Experience training, mentoring, and supervising junior human factors professionals.ย

$140,000 - $165,000 a year
This range is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as Trilogy Federal conducts an individual equity review for every candidate based on experience, location, education, industry experience, and comparisons to internal pay bands.
