The full salary range for the Supervisor - Data Services is $87,000 - 160,000. Actual salaries will vary by geographic location and are based on factors such as candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, competencies, and company tenure & equity. In addition to base compensation, this role is eligible for an annual incentive plan based on company performance and individual performance.
Supervisor - Data Services Overview
Supervises the day-to-day work performed by the Data Services team, with a focus on Data Engineering, BI Reporting, and Data Operations / Production Support. This is a hands-on leadership role responsible for work planning, team execution, and operational reliability of data pipelines, data stores, and reporting deliverables. Partners closely with IT and business stakeholders to deliver trusted data products and analytics while embedding data management and data governance best practices (metadata, lineage, data quality, access controls, and standards) into delivery and operations. Responsible for ensuring corporate data assets and reporting outputs supported by the team align with IT policies, security requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley).
Essential Duties:
  • Supervises day-to-day execution across Data Engineering, BI Reporting, and Data Operations / Production Support; assigns work, balances priorities, and removes blockers
  • Participates in technical planning for data platform, database, and reporting initiatives; translates roadmap items into executable work
  • Evaluates operational data and reporting needs; partners with stakeholders to gather requirements and recommend solutions
  • Plans and tracks delivery for planned and ad hoc work (work requirements, sequencing, estimates, and status reporting)
  • Provides technical direction (standards, troubleshooting, work procedures) and supports code/solution reviews and operational readiness
  • Makes recommendations regarding priorities, operational improvements, and data service practices that influence outcomes for the broader functional area
  • Leads incident response for data pipelines and reporting: triage, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and documentation
  • Oversees production support practices (monitoring/alerting, deployments, scheduled jobs, runbooks) to meet reliability and SLA expectations
  • Evaluates and helps implement new data tools/solutions; supports integration of new technologies and initiatives (readiness, migrations, knowledge transfer)
  • Ensures adoption of data governance and data management practices (metadata, lineage, data quality monitoring, access controls, and reporting governance)
  • Ensures data and information security practices are followed, including least-privilege access and secure handling of sensitive data (e.g., PHI)
  • Ensures work is performed in accordance with company policies, department procedures, and established technical standards; reinforces consistent execution across the team
  • Coordinates work intake and delivery with customers, vendors/Partners, and other IT teams; communicates status, risks, and dependencies
  • Monitors individual and team performance (timeliness, quality, and SLA adherence); provides feedback, coaching plans, and follow-up to close performance gaps
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of data engineering concepts and practices (data integration, ETL/ELT, scheduling/orchestration, reliability, and operational support)
  • Knowledge of BI/reporting concepts, including semantic layers, report development lifecycle, and supporting consistent metric definitions
  • Working knowledge of data management and data governance practices, including metadata, lineage, data quality, stewardship, and reporting governance
  • Ability to lead day-to-day work delegation, prioritize competing demands, and coordinate delivery across multiple workstreams
  • Strong customer partnership skills, including requirements clarification, expectation setting, and communicating status/risks clearly
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including incident triage, root cause analysis, and preventive improvement mindset
  • Understanding of security, compliance, and data protection expectations (e.g., HIPAA/PHI, regulatory reporting, retention, appropriate access controls)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Understanding of project delivery practices and basic project management concepts (planning, sequencing, dependencies, and milestones)

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree. May substitute equivalent work experience or demonstrated competency for education
  • 3 - 5 years' experience as a Team Lead
  • 7+ years IT experience, with 5 of those years focusing on building large scale application development and application system design
  • Experience managing customer requirements or demands
  • Or, equivalent military experience

Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field
  • Experience leading or serving as a team lead in one or more areas: data engineering, BI/reporting, or data operations/production support
  • Experience with a BlueCross BlueShield Plan or other health and/or life insurance-related company
  • Experience working in regulated data environments and supporting data governance practices (metadata, lineage, data quality, access controls)
  • Experience with enterprise data warehouse/data repository concepts and supporting large corporate data repositories, reporting, data marts, and analytics consumers
  • Experience leading project teams including meeting deliverable dates, leading a work team(s) and direct customer contact
  • Experience managing customer requirements or demands
