What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Commercial Development professional, and why are they important?

To thrive in Commercial Development, you need strong business acumen, market analysis skills, and a relevant degree such as in business, finance, or economics. Familiarity with CRM platforms, data analytics tools, and financial modeling software is typically required, along with certifications like Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) being advantageous. Outstanding negotiation, relationship-building, and strategic thinking abilities distinguish top performers in this field. These competencies are crucial for identifying opportunities, driving revenue growth, and forging successful partnerships in a competitive commercial environment.

How does a Commercial Development professional typically interact with other departments within a company?

Commercial Development professionals frequently collaborate with teams such as marketing, sales, finance, and product development to drive business growth. They often bridge the gap between market opportunities and internal capabilities, ensuring that new initiatives align with company strategy and customer needs. Regular cross-functional meetings and joint project work are common, as these professionals gather input, align goals, and coordinate execution across diverse stakeholders. This collaborative environment requires strong communication and negotiation skills to balance multiple perspectives and achieve commercial objectives.

What is commercial development?

Commercial development refers to the process of planning, designing, constructing, and managing properties intended for business purposes, such as office buildings, retail centers, warehouses, and hotels. It involves market analysis, securing financing, obtaining permits, and coordinating with architects, contractors, and local authorities to bring a project to completion. Commercial developers play a key role in transforming land or existing buildings into functional spaces that meet the needs of businesses and communities. The goal is to create profitable, sustainable properties that attract tenants and generate income.

Job description

Role

Peregrine is hiring a Commercial Development individual to help shape and drive the company's expansion into new markets, verticals, and other nonstandard opportunities across Peregrine's business lines. This role will work closely with our CEO to find, develop, and scope how to bring the Peregrine platform to customers, and then work closely with our forward-deployed teams to make those pilots and proof points successful. This work will require a mix of creativity, tenacity, strategic thinking, and the ability to identify where Peregrine's operational-AI platform can best deliver value, and strong executive engagement skills and presence. While this role will start as an individual contributor, over time, we expect this person to build and lead a small but world-class team of similarly minded individuals.

What You'll Do
  • Drive Peregrine's expansion into new markets and verticals, identifying, developing, and nurturing high-value opportunities where Peregrine's operational AI and data foundation can deliver transformational outcomes.
  • Own and develop strategic business development opportunities end-to-end, from early concept and relationship development through pilot design, deal structuring, and internal handoff to implementation teams.
  • Partner closely with the CEO to pursue high-impact opportunities surfaced through the CEO's network, Peregrine's investors, and other senior stakeholders.
  • Translate Peregrine's vision into compelling executive narratives, helping prospective partners understand how Peregrine can rapidly deliver operational wins through its platform, pricing, and deployment model.
  • Design and scope high-impact pilot engagements, ensuring Peregrine's implementation and deployment teams are set up for success and positioned to deliver meaningful early outcomes.
  • Navigate organizational and political dynamics within partner organizations, ensuring the right internal sponsors are aligned and Peregrine's work is visible, supported, and positioned to scale.
What We're Looking For
  • Proven experience driving complex business development or partnership opportunities, requiring deep engagement with C-Suite and other VP-level stakeholders, ideally at a high-growth startup or some other non-traditional enterprise- or IR-like sales motion.
  • Strong strategic intuition for valuable business problems; an ability to see where massive value can be created at the intersection of a unified data layer and AI, along with the judgment to know when Peregrine's partnership is a mere nice-to-have vs. something transformational.
  • Exceptional executive communication and presence, with the emotional intelligence and credibility to represent Peregrine independently in senior conversations and complex organizational environments.
  • A strong alignment with Peregrine's operating ethos: humility, openness, a bias toward action, comfort with ambiguity, and a willingness to take broad ownership of problems.
  • First-principles thinking and intellectual independence, with the ability to challenge assumptions, push back constructively, and help shape Peregrine's strategy for entering and scaling new markets.
  • Persistence, creativity, and tenacity, with a demonstrated ability to create opportunities where the path forward is not immediately obvious and the sales motion has yet to be fully defined.
