Job description

POSITION SUMMARY. Under general supervision of the Revenue Cycle Manager, the Billing Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the billing staff. This includes managing workflow, resolving billing issues, training new staff and ensuring accuracy and compliance with relevant guidelines and regulations. The Billing Supervisor maintains current and proficient knowledge of commercial and government Medical, Behavioral Health and Dental insurance billing practices and guidelines.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The list that follows is not intended as a comprehensive list, but rather to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) will be required to perform a variety of duties listed, including but not limited to:

  1. Supervise and coordinate the activities of the billing team as well as collaborating billing related activities with the outsourced billing company.
  2. Oversee Accounts Receivable and works with the billing team to monitor aging accounts for collections and/or claims follow up.
  3. Review and audit billing documentation for accuracy.
  4. Ensure compliance with billing regulations and procedures related to medical, behavioral health and dental billing for both commercial and government insurance payers.
  5. Monitor and analyze billing trends and develop billing related performance reporting dashboards.
  6. Coordinate with billing staff and insurance payers to resolve billing issues and disputes.
  7. Collaborate with Coding staff and other departments to keep them informed of relevant billing/coding changes and updates as needed.
  8. Develops and/or revises policies and procedures regarding billing practices.
  9. Follows the Fiscal Policy regarding collections and acts as the main contact for outside collection agencies.
  10. Lead collaboration efforts with clinic managers regarding intake processes that impact billing accuracy and timeliness.
  11. Works to continually improve billing processes to increase efficiencies to maximize collections.
  12. Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required for an employee to successfully perform their duties.

  1. High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Minimum of four (4) years computerized medical billing experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  3. Demonstrated proficiency in supervising and motivating staff. Preference for supervisory experience for billing and/or medical front office staff.
  4. Bilingual, not required but strongly preferred.
  5. Current knowledge and experience in Medi-Cal, Denti-Cal, Medicare and commercial billing activities and processes. Demonstrates an understanding of ICD/CPT coding protocols as well as State/Federal billing requirements.
  6. Working understanding of Electronic Health Record to include integrated software packages and databases.
  7. Demonstrates collaborative teamwork in a respectful manner with various levels with the organization as well as externally.
  8. Excellent communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  9. Proven ability to provide excellent customer service.
  10. Skills in establishing and maintaining positive and effective working relationships with clinic front office staff, clinic managers and others during the course of performing in the role.
  11. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software programs.
  12. Ability to independently organize, adapt, and prioritize daily tasks.
  13. Must have reliable transportation and engage in regular attendance.
