These skills and qualities ensure accurate financial records, compliance, and efficient business operations.

Is AI replacing bookkeepers?

AI technology is automating certain bookkeeping tasks such as data entry, reconciliation, and report generation, which can increase efficiency. However, bookkeepers are still needed for tasks requiring judgment, analysis, and understanding of complex financial situations, making the role evolving rather than entirely replaced.

What are some common challenges bookkeepers face when managing accounts for multiple clients or departments?

Bookkeepers who handle accounts for multiple clients or departments often encounter challenges such as keeping financial records organized, maintaining accuracy across varied account structures, and meeting different reporting deadlines. They must be adept at managing time efficiently and using accounting software to track separate ledgers without errors. Regular communication with clients or department heads is crucial to clarify transactions and resolve discrepancies promptly. Staying updated on compliance requirements and adapting to each client's unique needs also adds complexity, but proactive organization and strong attention to detail help bookkeepers succeed in this dynamic environment.

Responsibilities
Backyard Bookkeeper is looking for new senior bookkeepers to join our team. As a member of our accounting team, you will be keeping the books (data entry, reconciliation, review, financial statements) for a handful of regular clients, taking responsibility for enterprise clients with more complex financial reporting, as well as helping with incoming large projects that require cleanup or setup before we can transition them to "maintenance mode" bookkeeping.
This is a w-2 position and requires you to sign a non-compete agreement.
You will be working from home, although we have in-person team lunches quarterly and two annual company events. We are looking for residents of Utah, but we may consider out-of-state candidates on a case by case basis.
Qualifications
  • Daytime availability for meetings and client calls. Even though you can do most of the work whenever you want, you must have regular availability during regular business hours in order to communicate with your clients and participate in team meetings and training. In addition, our training is pretty hands-on, and there will be more required daytime Zoom meetings for the first 2-4 months of your employment.
  • Prepared to work a minimum of 20 hours per week. There is an option to increase to 35-40 hours per week over time.
  • Good at managing multiple ongoing projects across several clients.

  • At least three years of full-charge accounting experience in a small business environment (including data entry, A/R, A/P, reconciliations, etc).
  • Thorough understanding of general accounting/double-entry bookkeeping principles, comfortable making journal entries correctly.

  • Self-motivated, able to work effectively under deadlines without much supervision, excellent follow-through.
  • Have your own computer with a number pad, headset, and webcam, along with a good internet connection.
  • Type at least 50 WPM, not afraid of data entry (sometimes it gets tedious, but we do our best to mix it up with more interesting work).
  • Generally tech savvy on computers, Windows, Microsoft Office, and internet; able to learn new software quickly.

Additional Information/Benefits:
  • Flexible hours
  • On the job training and development
  • Work from the comfort of your own home
  • Interact with lots of interesting people and companies in varying industries
  • Have a variety of ongoing projects, rather than keeping the same routine every day and week
  • Mileage and home office expense reimbursements
  • Company IRA matching up to 3%
  • Each team has an in-person meeting (usually lunch or dinner) once a quarter - attendance is required in most cases
  • We hold two events each year in the SLC, Utah area: a company retreat in the fall and a holiday party in early December. Attendance is required at both events if you live within reasonable traveling distance (mileage is reimbursed). If not, the company will pay for a plane ticket to at least one of the semiannual get-togethers.
  • We currently have an office location in Sandy, Utah. You are welcome to take advantage of the office space if you prefer to work outside of your home office some of the time.

***One last note: we have an intensive, careful hiring process because we are dedicated to choosing the best qualified candidates who will work well within our company culture and provide excellent service to our clients. Please be prepared to have as many as five interviews before we make any final decision, and the whole process may take several weeks.
