Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Director of Institutional Research and Assessment, the Assistant Director of Institutional Assessment will continue work with a comprehensive college-wide assessment strategy in alignment with Hood College’s mission and Middle States Reaccreditation requirements. This position is responsible for coordinating all aspects of designing, implementing, completing, and preparing assessment reports developed in collaboration with the faculty, department chairs, program directors, Dean of Graduate School, and the Provost to study student learning outcomes at the course, program and institutional level. The Assistant Director is responsible for collaborating with administrative department managers for reporting on administrative effectiveness at the departmental level. The Assistant Director also will train faculty and administrators on best practices in assessment programs and how to implement strategies to improve student learning outcomes and organizational effectiveness.
Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Education Program and Student Outcomes Assessment (60%)- Collaborate with faculty, department chairs, program directors, Dean of Graduate School, and the Provost to coordinate all aspects of designing, completing, and preparing assessment reports to study student learning outcomes at the course, program and institutional level.
- Serve as a member of the Core Oversight Board (COB) and assist with assessment of the core curriculum.
- Schedule regular meetings with (core area) assessment coordinators to ensure appropriate level of progress is being made throughout the assessment cycle.
- Respond to faculty assessment needs and requests, particularly for programmatic review and accreditation.
- Perform complex data analysis and interpret a variety of outcome measures and trend data.
- Draft reports on findings and work with faculty to ensure the information is used.
- Analyze quantitative and qualitative data and assist in the preparation of spread sheets, charts and tables for publication and presentation.
- Conduct research on topics as designated; assemble and distribute reports and information to the College community.
- Maintain an appropriate IR assessment calendar and publish it to the campus community for evaluating student learning outcomes and program effectiveness.
- Maintain detailed records of assessment activities, analysis and Update the Assessment of Student Learning Manual as needed.
- Serve as an ex-officio member on Curriculum Committee and Graduate Council.
- Manage the system for assessment of student learning outcomes (currently Anthology Portfolio), to include rubric design, set up, results analysis, and reporting.
- Manage the course evaluation system.
- Provide technical support for instructors and students.
- Update training materials as needed.
- Use best practices for institutional effectiveness to promote administrative assessment and provide feedback to be used in continuous improvement process.
- Manage the annual administrative assessment data collection and prepare reports for Planning, Budgeting, and Assessment Committee (PBAC).
- Assist administrators in developing annual goals for departmental program assessment that connect with the current strategic priorities and annual business objectives.
- Monitor annual goals and assist with implementation of continuous improvement processes.
- Maintain detailed records of institutional effectiveness activities and reporting.
- Use knowledge of best practices in assessment to provide ongoing training for academic and administrative programs concerning all aspects of assessment through workshops or individual training sessions.

Master’s degree and experience in educational and/or social research or related field required or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with educational assessment and institutional effectiveness in higher education is required. Familiarity with the various laws that affect higher education is required (HEOA, FERPA, Title IV and Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1965, Section 505 of the Rehabilitation Act, etc.).
Technology SkillsProficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), e-mail and Internet. Ability to learn new applications quickly including organization-wide information systems and department-specific software applications. Experience with assessment and statistical software is desired.
Language SkillsAbility to effectively present information and positively respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, administrators, staff and the general public both in person and virtually. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Strong public speaking skills and teaching or training experience is required.
Mathematical SkillsStrong statistical and analytical skills required. Ability to work with and apply statistical and mathematical concepts timely and accurately, either manually, by using a calculator, or a spreadsheet package (such as Excel); demonstrated knowledge of assessment including research design, data collection, data analysis, and reporting; and experience working with a variety of databases; and the use of computer applications to manipulate and analyze data is required.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to interpret a variety of complex policies and procedures to resolve problems and make decisions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, draw conclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work in theoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate. Ability to use appropriate statistical inference skills.

Work EnvironmentThe work environment described here is representative of what an employee will encounter while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and could include interaction with other staff, students, and the public, telephones and office equipment. The Assistant Director of Institutional Assessment may be required to meet with faculty and administrator groups at campus locations other than the OIRA office suite and may need to meet with these individuals outside of normal core business hours.
CompensationThis is a position with an annual starting salary range of $58,000 - $65,000 depending on circumstances including an applicant’s skills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications, prior job experience, training, and other relevant factors. Hood College has provided a compensation range representing its good faith estimate of what the College may pay for the position at the time of posting. The College may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range.
