Job description

We are currently seeking an Assistant Chief Engineer for the upcoming opening of this new hotel. The Assistant Chief Engineer reports to the Chief Engineer and is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the engineering team. In the absence of the Chief, the Assistant Chief will assume the hotel's administrative, financial, and operating aspects as they relate to engineering. The Assistant Chief Engineer will maintain and supervise the hotel's maintenance operations, encompassing refrigeration, heating, plumbing, heating and cooling systems, energy controls, and energy efficiency. The position is also responsible for maintaining standards as required by the city and the brand. Ideal candidates will have experience with major brands and a positive, solution-oriented focus. This position requires flexible scheduling, including availability on weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Expectations

  • Provides professional and courteous service to all guests at all times.
  • Supervises maintenance operations, including but not limited to refrigeration, heating, plumbing, water treatment, preventative maintenance, hotel front and back of house spaces, A/C units, ice machines, lighting, kitchen equipment, emergency generator, roof exhausts, electrical substations, fire and life safety systems, and other systems and equipment owned, leased, or managed by the hotel.
  • Monitors electric, gas, oil, and water consumption on a prescribed basis.
  • Monitors inventory levels, ordering new supplies as needed and maintaining a log of supplies used and purchased.
  • Ensures that all purchased services, including electrical, plumbing, and cleaning, are performed to exceed exhibitor and client expectations.
  • Supervises assigned associates. Assists with departmental scheduling.
  • Ensures all projects are completed according to specifications and within the specified timeframe.
  • Works closely with Housekeeping to ensure coordination of activities.
  • Maintains an ongoing preventive maintenance program for guestrooms, meeting rooms, public spaces, back-of-house areas, kitchens, and all hotel equipment.
  • Ensures the cleanliness and orderliness of all workspaces and storage areas.
  • Covers the Departmental Responsibilities whenever the Chief is unavailable or absent.
  • Interacts and has familiarity with City Agencies, including the NYC DOB, FDNY, and NYC DOH. Assists the Chief Engineer with local law compliance.
  • Attends staff and departmental meetings.
  • Completes projects as determined by the Chief Engineer.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of progressive facilities management experience in a hotel or a related field
  • High School Diploma
  • HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations, and general maintenance skills are required.
  • Plan and direct the work of others.
  • Solve problems using facts and personal judgment.
  • React quickly in emergency situations and make decisions that may involve the safety of others.
  • Work with different kinds of people.
  • Be available on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Demands: Lifting 50 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs. Requires walking or standing to a significant degree, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, and seeing.

Language Skills: Must have developed language skills to the point of being able to: Read instructions, safety rules, etc. Write reports with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Use correct English and a well-modulated voice to speak with poise, voice control, and confidence.

Licenses: Must be FSD, S-12, and S-13 certified or obtain certification within 18 months of the hire date.

*The anticipated compensation range for the position is $70 to $75K per year. The salary offered to a successful candidate will depend on several factors, including but not limited to years of experience in the job, years of experience in the required industry, education, and other relevant qualifications.
