Position Summary

The Assistant Chief Engineer will assist in overseeing all engineering and technical operations-including the maintenance and performance of HVAC and refrigeration systems-ensuring their safe and efficient operation at TD Coliseum. This position is required to work weekends and help supplement evening coverage for shows when required.

This role pays an annual salary of $87,000-$94,000 CAD.

This position will remain open until August 14, 2026.

Responsibilities
  • Assist the Chief Engineer with HVAC, refrigeration, and heating system operations.
  • Support ice rink setup and maintenance to ensure high-quality ice for events.
  • Oversee, supervise, and schedule maintenance employees within the facility.
  • Act as the Chief Engineer when Chief Engineer unavailable.
  • Monitor building systems for malfunctions; report or address issues as needed.
  • Keep accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.
  • Follow established preventive maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors as required.
  • Assist with event setup and facility preparations.
  • Maintain familiarity with safety protocols and hazardous materials handling.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain the building's environmental & mechanical systems.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3-5 years' experience in maintenance and repair of HVAC or related building systems and knowledge of ice refrigeration.
  • Prior experience in a supervisory position is required; some experience in a Sports and Entertainment Venue is preferred.
  • 4th Class Engineer or "B" Class Refrigeration Certification as granted by the Ontario TSSA.
  • Experience in ice installation and ice maintenance (ORFA Certified Ice Technician designation) is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Office, Ice Plant, CMMS, and BAS software systems.
  • A demonstrated understanding of and the ability to maintain the building's environmental & mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, TSSA, and WSIB requirements.
  • Knowledge of boilers, chillers, refrigeration, and ice-making is required.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in operational procedures, facility capabilities, industry terminology, event-related services, and technical requirements for the types of events anticipated at the facility.
  • Knowledge in a hockey facility includes a demonstrated knowledge of NHL/AHL standard rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Understanding of operational characteristics of events, fire and public safety regulations
  • Self-motivated with excellent interpersonal and communications skills and the ability to function and make management decisions in a fast-paced high-pressure environment with strong attention to detail and organization.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team-including unions.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and an extended number of consecutive days to maintain the building and its physical/climate control systems, including the refrigeration plant.
