POSITION SUMMARY

The Manager of Data Engineering & Architecture at PTR will lead and mentor the Data Engineering and Data Architecture teams, overseeing the delivery, reliability, and performance of modern and legacy data pipelines and infrastructure. This leader will ensure the effective execution of PTR’s data engineering strategy, supporting both innovation in the modern stack (Fivetran, Snowflake, dbt and Sigma) and continuity in legacy environments. The manager will facilitate close partnership with Architects, the BI/analytics leaders, and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver high-quality, scalable, and secure data solutions for the business.

COMPENSATION

This position offers a competitive compensation package, benchmarked to regional market standards. It consists of a base salary plus the opportunity for quarterly profit sharing after one year of employment.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Team Leadership: Direct, mentor, and develop the Data Engineering and Data Architecture teams (currently two Data Engineers and additional contract resources), fostering growth, accountability, and a culture of collaboration and excellence. As well as providing day-to-day direction, prioritization, and technical guidance to contractors supporting data engineering, data architecture, platform operations, or modernization efforts
  • Project Oversight: Plan, delegate, and deliver on the building and maintenance of data pipelines, data models, and platform operations across the modern (Fivetran, Snowflake, dbt, Sigma) and provide input on legacy stacks.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with the current Architects (outside of Data Architects), BIM Program Manager, and business data owners to refine architecture standards, implement new technologies, and design data models to meet evolving business needs.
  • Cross-Functional Alignment: Work closely with Analytics leadership (Analytics Manager, Lead BI Analyst, BI Developers/Analysts) on requirements gathering, backlog grooming, sprint planning, and analytics enablement.
  • Operational Excellence: Ensure high standards for data quality, pipeline reliability, system performance, and secure operations by embedding best practices and process improvements.
  • Architecture Leadership: Provide direct leadership to the Data Architect role, ensuring architectural decisions, standards, and platform roadmaps are aligned with business priorities, engineering capacity, and enterprise technology direction.
  • Solution Governance: Review and guide solution designs, data models, integration patterns, and platform decisions to ensure scalability, maintainability, security, and operational supportability.
  • Resource Management: Align capacity with business priorities, manage team workload, and recruit future engineering talent as needed.
  • Cost & Performance Management: Oversee cloud usage/cost monitoring (with Data Operations), proactively manage and optimize resource allocations.
  • Risk & Compliance: Champion security, governance, and compliance initiatives across engineering solutions.
  • Documentation and Process: Ensure team adheres to high standards for technical documentation, runbooks, and knowledge sharing.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive adoption of DevOps/DataOps principles, innovation in automation, and professional development for all team members.
REQUIREMENTSMUST HAVE
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or closely related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 6+ years in data engineering and/or cloud platform roles, with 2+ years in a lead or people management capacity.
  • Ability to balance strategic architecture oversight with day-to-day delivery management and operational execution.
  • Proven track record building and managing robust, scalable data platforms using modern cloud technologies (including Fivetran, Snowflake, dbt, Sigma).
  • Hands‑on experience architecting, maintaining, and optimizing complex data pipelines, data warehouses, or analytics platforms.
  • Experience providing direction, guidance, or oversight to contractors, consultants, or other non-employee technical resources.
  • Deep understanding of data modeling, ETL/ELT, CI/CD, DevOps, and data security best practices.
  • Ability to manage team execution, prioritize workloads, and deliver on time.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and cross-team collaboration skills.
NICE TO HAVE
  • Experience supporting data operations in hybrid (cloud/legacy) environments.
  • Experience managing hybrid teams (modern and legacy stack support).
  • Familiarity with business intelligence and analytics platforms, including working within Agile/Scrum delivery frameworks.
  • Prior experience supporting large-scale platform/cloud migrations or data modernizations.
  • Certifications in Snowflake, cloud platforms, or management (e.g., PMP, Scrum Master).
  • Commitment to coaching and mentoring early-career engineering talent.
