Senior Director of Financial Planning & Analysis

Internal R&D Financial Advisory

Position Overview

The Senior Director of Financial Planning & Analysis partners strategically with R&D leadership to drive financial discipline, evaluate return on investment, and enable data-driven decision-making on internal projects and resource allocation. This director-level role combines deep financial analysis with business acumen to influence executive strategy, optimize portfolio management, and establish FP&A as a trusted strategic partner to engineering and product leadership.

Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Financial Analysis & R&D Partnership (40%)
  • Lead financial evaluation and ongoing monitoring of major internal R&D projects and technical initiatives, including ROI analysis, value realization tracking, and resource allocation optimization
  • Develop sophisticated financial models for R&D portfolio analysis, scenario planning, and capital allocation decisions
  • Serve as trusted financial advisor to Engineering and Product leadership; partner on strategic business decisions and trade-off analysis
  • Identify and quantify cost reduction opportunities, efficiency gains, and operational improvements across R&D functions
Strategic Budgeting & Business Planning (40%)
  • Lead development of multi-year strategic plans and annual operating budgets for R&D organization, incorporating technology roadmap, project pipelines, and capacity planning
  • Manage monthly forecast cycles and variance analysis; proactively communicate business dynamics, emerging risks, and revised assumptions to executive leadership
  • Develop business case frameworks and approval processes for major R&D investments and strategic initiatives
  • Build and maintain financial models for headcount planning, project resource allocation, and internal charge-back or cost allocation methodologies
Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration (15%)
  • Lead and mentor FP&A analysts assigned to engineering; ensure quality financial analysis and professional development
  • Partner with Finance, HR, and Legal to align financial processes, controls, and reporting standards across R&D operations
  • Influence enterprise financial planning and corporate strategy through R&D financial perspective
Strategic Reporting & Advisory (5%)
  • Deliver strategic financial insights and recommendations to C-level executives on R&D performance, investment returns, and resource effectiveness
  • Develop executive-facing dashboards, KPI frameworks, and periodic reviews summarizing R&D financial health and strategic progress
Qualifications, Education & Experience
  • 12+ years of experience in financial analysis, FP&A, corporate finance, or strategic business analysis
  • 5+ years in a leadership or advisory role with demonstrated ability to partner across business functions
  • Experience in R&D, engineering, technology, or product environments preferred
  • Advanced degree (MBA, MS Finance, MS Analytics) or equivalent experience preferred
  • Proficiency in financial modeling, forecasting, and advanced Excel; familiarity with FP&A software platforms
