Job description

Assistant Recreation Leader
Recreation Department - Town of Brookline
$16 - $18.22 hourly | 18.75 hours weekly
The Town of Brookline's Recreation Department is seeking an energetic and organized part-time Assistant Recreation Leader to support the coordination and delivery of Youth Sports and Therapeutic Recreation Sports programs. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone who enjoys working directly with the community, supporting volunteers, and helping create safe and inclusive recreational experiences for participants of all abilities. Evening and weekend work required.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate seasonal youth and therapeutic sports leagues, including registration management, team assignments, roster and schedule creation, and volunteer recruitment/training.
  • Purchase and distribute equipment and uniforms; assist with setup and supervision of games, practices, and tournaments, including evening and weekend coverage.
  • Serve as an on-site supervisor at sports programs and special events, ensuring safety, sportsmanship, and fun.
  • Respond to participant and volunteer inquiries with strong customer service and problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with other town departments, community partners, and outside sports program administrators.
  • Assist with community events and department-wide recreation programming.

Qualifications
  • Candidates should have a working knowledge of sports rules, field layouts, and recreational league organization, along with strong communication, organization, and computer skills. The ideal candidate is comfortable leading volunteers or part-time staff, engaging positively with youth and families, and adapting quickly to changing situations.
  • Prior experience working in recreation, youth sports coaching, therapeutic or adaptive programs, camp leadership, or community programming is highly desirable. Experience supervising volunteers or part-time staff is a plus.
  • A valid Massachusetts Class D Driver's License is required.
