Job Description

Road Machinery & Supplies Co. is searching for a Foreman to join its team at its Negaunee location. In this role, the main responsibilities will include assisting the Service Supervisor & Service Manager in directing daily workflow, ensuring a safe and clean work environment for all Technicians, and mentoring of all Technicians in the shop. The main duty in this role is acting as a role model in a safe and efficient way of completing work. This is a working position that also includes Shop Technician Responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

Safety:

  • Ensures tooling in the shop is in safe, usable condition
  • Audits high risk employee's safe work practices and other safe work practices
  • Commits and monitors the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times by one's self and other Technicians
  • Assists with near miss incident reporting and corrective action problem solving with team
  • Maintains a clean and safe work area. Follows all safe work practices and policies and adheres to contamination control requirements
  • Conducts job safety audits to ensure Lockout/Tagout, Pre-job Hob Hazard Analysis, and Monthly Safety Inspections etc. are completed and effective
  • Assist supervisor with assuring all safety standards are being met and provide training or guidance as needed

Workflow:

  • Assists Supervisor in directing daily workflow and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Communicates with Service Supervisor/Manager regarding productivity and issues
  • Advises customers on course of action in repairs. Communicates before, during, and after the repair when the Supervisor is absent/unavailable or when requested
  • Reviews customer jobs as necessary to ensure that work is completed correctly and proper work procedures are being followed
  • Inspect completed machines to assure all repairs were performed complete and to RMS work standards
  • Assists and supports the Supervisor throughout the day and/or when the Supervisor is absent with customer interactions and administrative duties

Mentoring:

  • Assists with onboarding of new Technicians and Intern Technicians
  • Provides assistance to all levels of technicians at the branch
  • Mentors new employees, including apprentices, on job hazard analysis and safe working practices

Shop Technician:

  • Perform routine maintenance on all types of mobile heavy equipment
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair engine complaints
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair to various types of mobile equipment hydraulic systems
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosis, and repair of basic DC electrical systems

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Management experience preferred
  • Technical or Associates in Diesel Engine Repair or Automotive Technician Diploma
  • 6-8 years of technical or mechanical knowledge in heavy equipment
  • Knowledge of DC electrical troubleshooting process and operation.
  • Knowledge of basic hydraulic system structure, function, and operation.
  • Knowledge of basic diesel engine operation and aftertreatment structure, function and operation.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills required
  • Strong people leader who develops his/her employees through coaching and feedback
  • Strong computer skills required
  • Personal characteristics: planning/organization, customer focus, problem solving, even temperament, leadership, strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Able to work responsibly, safely, and intelligently
  • Have the desire to take action, improve, and be appreciative
  • Possess the capability to engage with customers, co-workers, and vendors in a respectful manner
