JOB SUMMARY

Join our team at Scientific Protein Laboratories (SPL), a world leader in biosourced pharmaceuticals, located just outside of Madison, Wisconsin in Waunakee!  SPL is an innovative biopharmaceutical leader with unique products and services supporting the pharmaceutical industry globally.  For over 40 years, SPL specializes in the development and cGMP compliant manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).  SPL has an exciting opportunity to join the team as a Manager, Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS).

This position is responsible to implement policies to ensure a safe and healthy work environment. The manager is the leader and point of contact for all Scientific Protein Laboratories (SPL) EHS activities.  The manager works to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, develop and implement safety and environmental policies, conduct risk assessments, and promote a culture of safety and environmental stewardship within the organization. The manager plays a crucial role in preventing incidents such as occupational injuries, illnesses, and environmental mishaps by implementing and maintaining systematic approaches, safety protocols, and training programs. Emphasizes a proactive approach to managing risks and ensuring the well-being of employees and the surrounding environment. The Manager must effectively communicate compliance status and risk management decisions to upper management.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develops and implements guidelines and compliance activities related to federal, local, and state environmental regulations, including hazardous waste activities, underground storage tanks, air and water pollution control, and emissions data, toxic substance inventory and site audits. 
  • Coordinates testing and field evaluation to obtain data utilized in determining sources and methods of controlling pollutants using knowledge in chemistry and applied technology.  Coordinates sampling of dust, gases, vapors, and other potentially environmentally detrimental material for analysis.  Coordinates utilization of off-site laboratories for testing.  Prepares reports including observations, analysis of contaminants and recommendations.
  • Lead implementation of EHS initiatives.  Instills enthusiasm for the programs within the SPL populace.  Evaluates policies, programs, and physical conditions to assure quality standards, physical plant and equipment, protective equipment and safety procedures meet requirements for environment, health, and safety. 
  • Consults with representatives from government, equipment manufacturers, insurance companies, legal consultants, and others to evaluate procedures, and processes to assure meeting of applicable requirements.  Investigates adequacy of conditions that may affect employee health and safety.
  • Develop audit plans and lead site EHS inspections to ensure proper conditions exist.  Maintain records of audits as appropriate and submit and track work orders for corrections as needed. 
  • Manage external consultants to lead investigations and recommend solutions for EHS issues.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to the plant safety committee and the biohazard committee.
  • Lead efforts to work with legal counsel in the preparation of contracts involving environmental and safety laws.  Review waste contracts and approve all disposal sites for waste.
  • Works with research and development functions to evaluate the hazards associated with new product manufacturing.  Hazard evaluation must include biological risks.
  • Research and issue Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for SPL products.
  • Lead development of guidelines for training programs required by OSHA regulations, such as respiratory protection, forklift, hearing conservation and fire safety. 
  • Coordinates Process Safety Management and Combustible Dust programs and assures support systems are complying.
  • Coordinates and/or assists in conducting required pre-startup safety reviews. also reviews contract employee safe work practices and compliance with SPL policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in an appropriate physical science or engineering field.  Prefer certifications in the field (CHMM, CIH, PE, etc.).
  • Experience:  Minimum of 5 years of experience in environmental control, regulations, and safety.  Prefer experience in industrial chemical processing.
