The Indiana Health Information Exchange (IHIE) is one of the nation’s largest health information exchange organizations. IHIE has been around for over a decade, with its roots dating back 30 years. As a not-for-profit HIE, we enable hospitals, physicians, laboratories, payers, and other health service providers to avoid redundancy and deliver faster, more efficient, higher quality healthcare to patients in Indiana. Today, by making information available to approximately 50,000 healthcare providers in Indiana and neighboring states, we deliver services that make a real difference in health and healthcare.

We are seeking a Java Developer with expertise in design, development, maintenance, and support of web applications and data processing systems.  This position will focus on adding new capabilities for internal and external users, addressing production issues, and migrating/modernizing components of the existing infrastructure.  If you’re talented, driven, and enjoy a little fun, you’ll find IHIE a great place to work.

Summary:  Works closely with the IHIE Developers, Product Owners, Support/Integration Teams, and partners to design, develop, document, test, and debug technology solutions.  This role will exercise strong leadership, analytical, troubleshooting, development, and testing skills across multiple data feeds, processes, and repositories.

Essential Functions:
  1. Designs, develops, documents, tests, and debugs new and existing application code.
  2. Demonstrates leadership in technical direction, best practices & standards, and process improvement.
  3. Organizes Code Review processes and participates in assessment of peer output.
  4. Proficient in Java development, Java frameworks (Spring, Struts, JSF, ZK, Grails, etc.), and Object-Oriented Programming concepts, design patterns, and techniques.
  5. Experienced with related application development technologies, such as HTML, XML, SQL and relational databases, ORM platforms, JavaScript, security frameworks, testing frameworks, and application & web servers.
  6. Comfortable implementing, configuring, and managing builds & deployments, including source control (branching, merging, tagging), Jenkins, Maven, Archiva, build automation, and continuous integration. 
  7. Skilled with establishing and managing a local development environment and IDE from scratch.
  8. Comfortable in a UNIX environment, including bash, cron, and permissioning (application, user, and directory)
  9. Experienced with modernizing applications though implementing frameworks, platforms, and processes that would improve the efficiency of building and maintaining system functionality.
  10. Participates in full development life cycle including requirements analysis, design, testing, and deployment.
  11. Writes technical specifications based on conceptual design and stated business requirements.  
  12. Supports, maintains, and documents application functionality.  
  13. Analyzes code to find causes of errors and revises applications as needed.
  14. Participates in application design meetings to understand user needs and determine technical requirements.  
  15. Consults with product owners to prototype, refine, test and debug applications to meet needs.
  16. Participates working in agile/scrum environment.

 Education:         
  • BS in computer science or related field 
Experience:
  • 3+ years’ experience with Java/OOP and related application development frameworks
  • 3+ years’ experience with application troubleshooting, support, and enhancement
  • 3+ years’ experience with leading technical projects on enterprise-level systems
Skills/Characteristics:  
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team 
  • Ability to learn new and complicated technologies, techniques, tools, and business processes quickly
  • Experience handling demanding projects and juggling multiple priorities
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to research, understand, and take ownership of existing application code
Preferred:
  • Experience in healthcare helpful but not required
  • Experience with the Agile and/or Scrum methodologies preferred
  • Experience in UI Technologies like ReactJS preferred
