The Director of Accessibility & Student Advocacy is responsible for the overall functioning and performance of Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) student accommodation and case management, providing day-to-day leadership and direction with respect to policies, practices, systems, and operations. The Director of Accessibility & Student Advocacy is tasked with supporting students experiencing complex challenges impacting their lives. The Director of Accessibility & Student Advocacy works to connect students to both on- and off- campus resources that meet their specific needs, provide advocacy and help in working with faculty and staff and in navigating campus procedures, and encourages the development of student coping skills, resiliency, and self-advocacy.

Essential Include but are not limited to:
  1. Accessibility responsibilities:
  • Interacts with students to review medical, psychological, and educational documentation; determine appropriate and individualized accommodations based on documentation and need. Problem solves student concerns as they relate to student access and collaborates to resolve issues.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
  • Serve as a member of the Students of Concerns committee.
  • Manage and facilitate ADA-related matters for MUIH students, including confidential student files related to ADA accommodations.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of current and emerging statutory and regulatory requirements and best practices as it relates to Section 504 & 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504 & 508), Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 as amended (ADA), Fair Housing Act, and other federal, state, local, and accreditation related accessibility compliance requirements. In consultation with the Title IX/504/ADA Coordinator, regularly evaluate and modify services and programs to ensure federal and state compliance; and address student grievances.
  • Create a one-stop shop and workflow process for transitioning MUIH students’ request and receive accommodations
  • Promote understanding and awareness of programs, needs, and innovative services in the field of disability.
  • Establish and maintain practices, policies, and procedures to serve students with various disabilities; and regularly review and update the Office’s website and marketing publications related to programs and support services.
  • Manage technologies related to disability services; Researches and implements best practices related to academic accommodations, universal design and assistive technology. Continually monitors and evaluates the status of campus accessibility to include coordinating departmental responses with facilities, residential life and/or other departments to help ensure maximum access by disabled students.
  • Oversees and maintains confidential records and related information in accordance with federal regulations.
  • Enhances professional knowledge and skills by attending training sessions, workshops/seminars and reviewing published literature; ensures that subordinate staff knowledge and skills are enhanced through appropriate developmental tools.
  1. Case Management Responsibilities:
  • Serve as the primary case manager for MUIH students; support individual MUIH students of elevated concern who are presenting with concerns of self-harm and harm to others in tandem with the Students of Concern Committee and university leadership alongside the Associate Vice President for Student Life & Dean of Students. Serving as the Student Life liaison for University-wide retention efforts. Identify and implement retention strategies within Student Life.
  • Case management and advocacy; work with individual students to connect them to appropriate resources and supports on an on-going basis.
  • Co-lead case management with the Assistant Dean for Academic Support & Enrichment Programs for the Division of Student Life, Academic Affairs, and faculty.
  • Manage all student cases within case management/conduct software: Maxient.
  • Providing Title-IX related victim support services
  • Participate in online University Orientation programs
  • With the community culture in mind, employee will serve on committees as needed
  1. Performs other duties as assigned

Education and Experience Qualifications Required:
  • Master's degree in Counseling, Higher Education, or other relevant field required.
  • Two years of experience working with students in a college or university setting is required.
  • Two years experience required working with ADA compliance
Preferred:
  • Student Affairs professional experience in working with graduate students in the healing arts and integrative health.
  • Experience coordinating retention efforts, academic advising, and/or academic support.
  • Experience with providing or managing disabilities support for students.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA). A CSA is an individual, who by virtue of their university responsibilities and under the Clery Act, is designated to receive and report criminal incidents to the Department of Public Safety so that they may be included and published in the university's Annual Security Report. 
  • This position is designated as a Responsible Employee (RE). A RE is required to report incidents of sexual misconduct to the Title IX Coordinator.
