Communications Associate 


Location: Remote

Reports to: Communications Director 


Food Recovery Network (FRN) is seeking a Communications Associate. The Communications Associate will be responsible for the daily communication with our students and other stakeholders across all communications channels. This role requires someone who has a strong desire to collaborate across departments to draft a variety of materials to communicate our work and impact across audiences. Priority will be given to candidates with direct experience with an FRN chapter, but all eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.


An average day for this position will include collaborating closely across all departments to draft social media posts, reposting student content, replying to students across social media channels, drafting graphics, proofreading newsletters and blogs, and answering emails from students and stakeholders alike. 


FRN’s vision is to recover surplus food to feed everyone who is hungry in the US. FRN sees this position as crucial to growing our work and visibility of the students driving change across the U.S. to fight food waste and feed people.

Responsibilities:

The Communications Associate will report directly to the Program Director while FRN hires a Communications Director. They will collaborate closely across all departments including, program, development and the executive office. Work will include, but is not limited to: 


  • Manage execution of FRN’s editorial calendar
  • Collaborate across all departments to create messaging, graphics and social media content across all communication channels
  • Monitor and respond as appropriate to emails in the general inbox 
  • Engage with the network on all social media channels including reposting content, replying to DMs, and posting FRN’s Student & Alumni LinkedIn Group
  • Update and maintain chapter data on FRN’s website including ensuring that Chapter bios and the Chapter map remain up to date
  • Compile and generate content to support Chapter recruitment efforts, including videos and tips to help recruit new chapters
  • Highlight FRN chapters, student leaders, alumni, and other programs through social media and blog posts
  • Create relevant graphics and social media posts to promote programmatic efforts
  • Use analytics tools to gauge the success of social media posts
  • Find and post job opportunities relevant to our network
  • Draft and compile monthly newsletters including monthly chapter outreach and Student and Alumni newsletter
  • Draft quarterly funder updates and oversee the distribution of information
  • Draft Annual Report
  • Engage with alumni in FRN’s Student & Alumni LinkedIn Group
  • Pull data for dashboards and grant reports as appropriate
  • Assist with special projects as appropriate
  • Support for advocacy efforts
  • Support for roundtable talks
  • Creation and publication of partner agency newsletter


Candidate Qualifications:

  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues in real-time
  • Able to work as a supportive, involved team member
  • A relationship builder, collaborator, and/or connector
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Apps for Business
  • Sense of humor and creativity is a must
  • Have a valid driver’s license 
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Comfort using social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter) and Online Graphic Design tools (Canva, Adobe, etc)


Compensation & Benefits:

The compensation for this position is $50,000/year. Benefits include paid holidays, 8 hours of paid volunteering time, 15 days Paid Time Off (PTO), flexible work schedule, 100% employer-paid health insurance for those who live in DC, MD or VA and professional development opportunities.


Location:

This is a remote position, however, up to quarterly travel to FRN’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. or appropriate stakeholder events may be required as relevant. On a case-by-case basis, travel on behalf of FRN will be expected, to be determined with your manager.
