Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES

1. Assumes responsibility for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the organization’s accounting area, including accounting and tax practices, insurance, policies and procedures, monthly close process, reporting, relationships with regulatory bodies and external auditors, and budget coordination, preparation, and adherence

  1. Plans, organizes, directs and oversee the preparation of financial statements in a timely, consistent manner, according to generally accepted accounting principles, regulatory and Credit Union established policies.
  2. Ensure the maintainance and review of the general ledger, all subsidiary ledgers, and general ledger account reconciliations, which include Federal Reserve and FHLB accounts, fixed assets, accounts payable, accounts receivable, investments, cards, mortgages, and insurance products
  3. Leads and manages the annual budget preparation, providing support and assistance to all KCU departments and personnel; prepare the annual operating expense budget with input form all departments and ELT.
  4. Control, verify checks, and reconciliations of all cash accounts, fixed assets, electronic settlements; ensure that all accounting entries are properly recorded.
  5. Manage and ensure that cash funds are properly reconciled and managed on a daily basis; that daily automated teller machine (ATM), bill payment, and other cash related transactions are properly reconciled and recorded in the general ledger.
  6. Coordinate and serve as liaison for internal and external auditors, providing necessary documentation where applicable for internal and external audits, examinations, and regulatory compliance.
  7. Support the continual development and implementation of financial information and control systems, including general ledger, budgeting, cost accounting, fixed assets, mortgage secondary market reporting, and other subsystems.
  8. Ensure that monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements and reports for external compliance, the Board of Directors, Asset/Liability Committee (ALCO) and Executive Leadership are complete, timely and accurate.
  9. Oversee regulatory reporting. Ensures that all financial reports are prepared and submitted to management and regulators as required.
  10. Manage external and internal audits and NCUA exams to ensure effective communication and timely successful completion.
  11. Maintains relevant industry and application knowledge on an ongoing basis

2. Assumes responsibility for accurate, timely and complete financial statement reporting. Including the creation and maintenance of required systems and controls.

  1. Manage the preparation of the following reports: call reports; Federal Reserve FR2900 and regular general reports; Federal Home Loan Bank (QCR) reports; and other internal and external reports, as required.
  2. Oversee the development and preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual, and other periodic financial statements and reports. Ensures that reports provide end users with adequate operating and financial data.
  3. Ensure that records and reports are in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and government regulations.
  4. Ensure that external document submissions and filings are complete, accurate and timely.
  5. Oversees the coordination of audits of financial records and statements.
  6. Plan, organize, and manage budgetary activities and compilation of the annual budget and contribute to periodic forecasts for the organization. Provides management with budget reporting to identify variances at the business owner level
  7. Work with CFOL and VP of Finance to coordinate monthly review of adequacy of ACL and support the adherence to the CECL Accounting Standard..
  8. Prepares reports and analysis of departmental and branch operations and performance.

3. Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication and coordination with Credit Union personnel and management.

a. Aids and advises direct reports, finance and accounting staff, branch and department managers in handling accounting entries and reports and various comparative analyses.

b. Coordinates functions with other departments to ensure efficient reporting practices. Interfaces with Information Systems personnel in the development and implementation of accounting procedures consistent with new applications.

c. Assists and supports Credit Union personnel. Responds to questions and information needs.

d. Proactively keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant issues.

e. Attends and participates in meetings and committees as required.

4. Effectively manages the Department staff, ensuring optimal performance.

  1. Provides leadership to Department personnel through effective goal setting, delegation, and communication. Conducts regular staff meetings. Coach, develop and mentor staff as needed to maintain positive engagement of each staff member and the team as a whole.
  2. Foster a positive and engaging work environment for each team member by promoting skill development, coaching for improvement and growth.
  3. Conducts performance appraisals as required. Formulates and implements corrective actions as needed.
  4. Directs, schedules, and coordinates Department functions.
  5. Provides support and assistance to Department personnel as needed.
  6. Ensures that the quality and integrity of accounting services are maintained.

5. Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective business relations with vendors, outside auditors, regulators, and with professional trade groups.

  1. Maintain a thorough understanding of state and federal laws and regulations related to credit union compliance including bank secrecy and anti-money laundering laws appropriate to the position.
  2. Supports and enhances liaison between the Credit Union and external auditors and regulatory authorities.
  3. Represents the Credit Union with various trade professionals and groups.
  4. Ensures that the Credit Union’s professional reputation is maintained.
  5. Ensures that appropriate levels of confidentiality are maintained.

6. Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

1. Accurateness of financial and accounting statements, records, and reports are accurate and timely. Management is provided with useful and informative reports and data. The Credit Union’s financial position and results are accurately conveyed.

2. Appropriate department policies and procedures are developed and updated as needed.

3. Department functions are conducted in accordance with established principles, standards, and legal requirements.

  1. Credit Union assets are safeguarded and preserved.

5. Department personnel are effective and engaged.

6. Positive business relations exist with auditors, government officials, and trade professionals.

7. Good coordination and effective working relations exist with other departments. Assistance is provided as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification: Bachelor’s degree in accounting required. Graduate degree, CPA license

preferred but not required.

Required Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.

Knowledge of financial services industry accounting.

Thorough knowledge of credit union governmental regulations, reporting requirements, and related auditing functions.

Technical understanding of accounting.

Understanding of Credit Union operations and information needs.

Experience Required: Five or more years of progressive experience in financial reporting and accounting

including leading end of month closing, the preparation and review of financial statements

Three years Supervisory experience preferred.
