Job Title: Financial Controller

Location: Annapolis, Maryland

Position Overview:

Walnut Hill Landscape Company is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controller to oversee our financial operations and lead our accounting team. The Controller will be responsible for managing all aspects of financial management, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budget, and forecasts preparation, as well as development of internal control policies and procedures. This role will play a critical role in financial decision-making and the long-term financial health of the company, with a special focus on job costing to ensure accurate and effective project financial management. Proficiency in QuickBooks is essential to manage our accounting operations efficiently. This position reports directly to the President.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting, and Revenue Recognition tailored to the needs of a landscape company.
  • Implement and oversee job costing systems specifically for landscape projects, tracking project expenses, labor costs, and overheads against budgets to provide detailed cost analysis and improve financial performance.
  • Coordinate and direct the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and report variances, including detailed job cost reports for landscaping projects.
  • Prepare and publish timely monthly financial statements specific to the landscaping industry.
  • Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting relevant to the landscaping sector.
  • Research technical accounting issues for compliance with landscaping industry standards.
  • Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
  • Manage financial data in QuickBooks and ensure that it is accurately reflected in reports and analysis, catering to the specifics of the landscaping industry.
  • Additional controller duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Proven working experience as a Financial Controller, preferably within the landscaping or related industries.
  • 5+ years of overall combined accounting and finance experience, with a significant portion in a job costing environment relevant to landscaping.
  • Advanced degree in accounting.
  • CPA or CMA preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures, including significant experience with job costing.
  • Experience with creating financial statements.
  • Experience with general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process.
  • Proficient in QuickBooks and other financial management software.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
