To thrive as a Travel Medical Assistant, you need a strong background in clinical procedures, patient care, and medical terminology, typically supported by a medical assistant certification (CMA or RMA). Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems, basic laboratory equipment, and scheduling software is often required. You may work around a city, state, or even the country as a whole, based on personal preferences and registration. Many travel medical assistants work with agencies to find steady work. Each job may last anywhere from a few days to several months as employers look for more full-time help. Some travel medical assistants also take seasonal positions.

Travel medical assistants can increase their earnings by gaining specialized certifications, such as in phlebotomy or EKG, and by working in high-demand regions or facilities that offer higher pay. Advancing to supervisory roles or working overtime and per diem shifts can also help reach a $100,000 annual income, though it typically requires several years of experience and a strong skill set.

What are some of the unique challenges faced by Travel Medical Assistants compared to traditional medical assistants?

Travel Medical Assistants often need to quickly adapt to new clinical environments and different healthcare teams, which can be both exciting and challenging. They must be comfortable learning new protocols and electronic health record systems on short notice, and may work with diverse patient populations in various locations. Flexibility, strong communication skills, and the ability to build rapport quickly are essential, as assignments can vary in length and location. This dynamic role also offers the opportunity to gain broad experience and build a versatile skill set.

How do I become a traveling medical assistant?

To become a traveling medical assistant, you typically need to complete a postsecondary medical assisting program and obtain certification such as the CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) or RMA (Registered Medical Assistant).
