Job description

Position Title: Assistant Controller
Join a well-established construction organization where you'll play a critical role in supporting the financial operations of the branch. Reporting directly to the Branch Controller, the Assistant Controller serves as a key member across accounting, payroll, project management, and financial reporting. This position is ideal for an experienced construction accounting professional who thrives in a collaborative environment, enjoys improving processes and takes pride in maintaining financial accuracy and compliance.
Salary Range: $125,000 - $140,000 / Year DOE
Assistant Controller Responsibilities:
  • Partner with the Payroll Specialist to ensure accurate and timely weekly payroll processing
  • Respond to payroll jurisdiction, prevailing wage, and pay scale questions across multiple IBEW locals
  • Coordinate with the Corporate office to resolve payroll benefit questions and issues
  • Prepare certified payroll reports and required payroll filings for state and local jurisdictions
  • Complete prevailing wage requests and surveys for local unions and state or federal agencies
  • Create and distribute the weekly Billing Opportunities Schedule to Project Managers
  • Prepare monthly AIA billing documents and review billings with Project Managers
  • Verify invoices are accurately entered into Spectrum
  • Review collection items with the Billing Assistant and develop follow-up strategies
  • Monitor retention reports, invoice customers promptly, and review weekly Accounts Receivable and retention reports for discrepancies
  • Coordinate with the Branch Controller, Project Managers, and Estimating team to ensure new projects are properly set up in Spectrum
  • Ensure project budgets are established and all required documentation, including contracts, purchase orders, and change orders, is received
  • Review weekly Pending Change Order (PCO) reports and follow up on outstanding items
  • Review weekly project cost reports and resolve issues with the appropriate stakeholders
  • Prepare project Time & Material (T&M) rates in accordance with project requirements
  • Prepare quarterly Project Cost Summary (PCS) reports and review project performance and forecasts with leadership
  • Review and approve monthly subcontractor payments, manual check requests, and MasterCard expense reports
  • Partner with Corporate Accounts Payable to resolve payment and processing issues
  • Participate in quarterly financial reviews with the Branch Manager and Branch Controller, coordinating with Corporate to resolve questions
  • Compare monthly financial results against the annual budget
  • Assist in developing annual branch budgets
  • Support Corporate with year-end audit confirmations

Assistant Controller Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 8-10 years of accounting experience, preferably within the construction industry
  • Construction accounting experience is required
  • Strong knowledge of payroll processing, accounts receivable, and job cost accounting
  • Experience with Spectrum ERP or a similar construction accounting software
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with cross-functional teams
