Job Summary:

As a member of the Human Resources team, the Human Resources Generalist is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the HR department that serves a staff of 100+ across two NJ-based locations. The HR Generalist develops, leads, and evaluates a variety of human resources functions, policies, and procedures including benefits administration, compensation, off-boarding, performance management and employee relations. They will partner closely with their counterpart in DC to deliver leading edge HR practices to our employees across the organization. As a member of the HR Team, the HR Generalist consistently demonstrates support for and embodiment of the St. Hubert’s Values and helps guide others in doing so. The HR Generalist provides day to day supervision of the HR Assistant.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Consulting: The HR Generalist is responsible for providing strategic and tactical Human Resources leadership and consulting to managers and employees. Model, cultivate and steward an environment where all employees can flourish.
    1. Develop, implement, and maintain HR policies and procedures to ensure efficient departmental operations and compliance with applicable regulations.
    2. Provide HR policy interpretation.
    3. Provide guidance to employees and managers regarding HR procedures and policy questions.
    4. In collaboration with other members of the HR Team and organizational leadership, ensure that St. Hubert’s frames our staffing decision with an eye towards race, equity and inclusion.
  2. Compensation & Benefits: Manage and administer NJ-based Employee Compensation & Benefits Program.
    1. Maintain benefits files and policies.
    2. Conduct annual open enrollment, including documentation, employee communication/training and processing. Conduct benefits meetings with new employees and departing employees.
    3. Ensure accurate and timely processing of enrollment, claims, COBRA, ACA reporting, routine audits, etc. Correct and resolve discrepancies appropriately.
    4. Ensure legal compliance of benefits and policies (i.e., HIPAA, ERISA, FMLA, ADA, ACA, etc.) on existing, new, or anticipated legislation.
    5. Provide guidance to managers regarding compensation to ensure organizational equity. Manage regular market-based updates to compensation as well as annual merit increase program.
    6. Actively participate in biweekly payroll review.
  3. Health & Safety:Manage workers compensation claims and safety program, including trend assessments.
    1. Assist employees and managers in seeking care and filing claims for workplace injury incidents.
    2. Report worker’s compensation claims to carrier and follow through with all parties involved. Maintain OSHA log and post reports and forms, as required.
  4. Review, analyze, prepare and file required reports; make recommendations and/or decisions when necessary.
  5. Employee Wellness: Leads organization-wide Employee Wellness activities across both DC and NJ locations.
  6. Actively participates in organization wide activities, collaborating with peers to ensure strategic management and leadership of our employees.
  7. Always represent St. Hubert’s in a professional and courteous manner. Provide quality service to the public, volunteers, and employees recognizing their individual contributions to the success of the organization.
  8. Assist with special projects, conduct research and perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Knowledge of and ability to plan, implement, and administer benefits program, systems, policies, guidelines, compliance, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of general HR functions including recruitment, engagement, and employee relations.
  • Office 365, email, interview and database management software to efficiently accomplish work. Knowledge of ADP Workforce Now.
  • Demonstrated ability to exhibit sound judgment and ability to use discretion in handling confidential and sensitive HR issues in an objective, neutral, and strategic manner.
  • A team-oriented and collaborative approach to work, with an ability to bring out the best in colleagues.
  • Develop and manage productive relationships at all levels, establish trust and respond to staff in a thoughtful, sensitive and timely manner.
  • Ability to succeed in an atmosphere of multiple projects, shifting priorities, and deadline pressures.
  • Ability to be flexible, detail oriented and prioritize.
  • Ability to problem solve correctly, responsively, creatively and logically.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills including presentations to small and large groups.

  • Regularly sits at a computer station and operates electronic equipment.
  • Regularly moves about the facilities to coordinate work.
  • Ability to work in an environment that houses and cares for animals of a variety of species and that may include interaction with these animals.
  • Due to the nature of shelter work, may be exposed to deceased, fractious, or aggressive animals; common allergens; hostile or irate persons; zoonotic or other diseases; unpleasant noises, odors, or sights; and extreme temperatures.

Education and Experience:

Minimum 4 years of progressively responsible experience in multi-HR disciplines preferably in a nonprofit environment.

SHRM-CP or PHR strongly preferred.

Salary premium may be offered for multilingual candidates proficient in Spanish, French and Mandarin.
