Job Description

The Medical Director role at Children?s has overall responsibility for ensuring that services and programs provided through the department or service line are patient and family focused, clinically appropriate, operationally efficient, and achieve effective patient outcomes.

The focus of the Medical Director's administrative time will be spent developing and providing direction for the program (clinical services, clinical research, and education), including quality and safety leadership and improvement. Partners with administrative dyad partner for financial and administrative management of the service line. The role will coordinate clinicians associated with the department or service line, clinician consultants, and leaders of associated programs or units. The role will also monitor and support the clinical skills and involvement of professional staff associated with the department or service line and will cause such skills and involvement to be increased or expanded as appropriate to meet current and future needs.

This position has 0.8 FTE dedicated to direct patient care and 0.2FTE dedicated to Medical Director responsibilities.

Qualifications:

  • Physician licensed in the State of Minnesota.
  • Board certified in pediatrics or the appropriate practice specialty by the applicable certifying authority.
  • Minimum 5 years? experience as a practicing physician in the clinical practice area that they will lead, except when hiring the first physician at Children?s Minnesota in a particular specialty, in which case minimum experience will be determined by the Chief Medical Officer.
  • Leadership experience and familiarity with quality improvement work, safety initiatives, systems-based practice, patient-centered care.

Clinical Practice Responsibilities

  • Provides patient care services, including working on call as needed.

Quality and Safety Practices

  • Priorities the quality agenda and delivers results.
  • Updates the Chief of General Pediatrics on quality results monthly basis.
  • Continually evaluates current safety and quality metrics to determine their appropriateness.
  • Conducts the peer reviews of the procedures and results performed by technical staff and clinicians within the department.
  • Develops, maintains, and evaluates new practices, techniques, and protocols intended to enhance quality or safety.
  • Ensures participation in professional Grand Rounds, and other forums to represent the service line. Reports quality initiatives at Board Quality and Operations Performance Quality and Safety meetings.
  • Attends Safety Action Team meetings at least one hour per month where applicable.
  • Meets with the Chief of Quality at least one hour per quarter to review quality and safety issues of the program.
  • Participates in review of medical events and safety learning reports occurring in area of responsibility.
  • Maintains compliance with and personally adheres to Children?s Values, organizational policies and procedures, code of ethics, Principles of Integrity and Compliance, regulatory, accreditation standards, and job/department specific competencies.
  • Safeguards a patient?s right to privacy and confidentiality.
  • Recognizes and adheres to guidelines for professional boundaries.

Mission Driven Responsibilities

  • Provides oversight and leadership of teaching and research within the department or service line.
  • Understands, promotes, and executes on patient- and family-centered care initiatives.
  • Supports the organization in cost of care initiatives as they relate to utilization of services and other payer reform strategies.
  • Partners with administrative colleague in a dyad model for financial and administrative management of the department or service line.
  • Monitors and supports the clinical skills and involvement of professional staff associated with the service and will cause such skills and involvement to be increased or expanded as appropriate to meet current and future needs.
  • Provides services within the mission, vision and values of Children?s Minnesota.
  • Implements the integration of knowledge into unit/department operation.
  • Provides patient education after child/family learning needs are appropriately assessed. Education includes family-centered anticipatory guidance.
  • Participates in the education of in-hospital professional staff and multidisciplinary community professionals.
  • Demonstrates awareness and support of decisions made by unit and hospital groups, and communicates to leadership concerns and trends that require follow up.

Physician- Specific Responsibilities

  • Ensures adequate service coverage provided by Children?s clinicians and contracted clinicians as applicable.
  • Advises the Chief of General Pediatrics using supportive data regarding appropriate levels of staffing of clinicians and recruitment or development needs with special areas of expertise.
  • Provides guidance and support for employed clinicians who may encounter personal or professional obstacles to the attainment of optimal professional performance.
  • Addresses all concerns arising related to clinician behavior and Children?s Values or Professional Staff expectations.
  • Directly supports recruitment, hiring, and supervision of clinicians.
  • Coordinates with the Chief of General Pediatrics appropriate group goals and individual clinician goals for the Physician Incentive Program.
  • Participates as necessary in physician alignment activities related to department services.
  • Serves on such committees as the Chief of General Pediatrics may reasonably request from time to time.
  • Keeps informed with respect to new clinical knowledge, and support introduction of evidence-based changes to improve patient care.
  • Respond to and resolves complaints from family or staff.
  • Models Children?s values in a consistent and reliable manner.
  • Participates in philanthropic meetings for the division.
