Mechanical Design Engineer – IT Hyperscale

As the Mechanical Design Engineer you are responsible for product design, including product specifications, material selection, parametric modeling, and detailing drawings. We’re looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who can turn sheet metal into mission-critical infrastructure, designing IT datacenter racks, and network enclosures. This role blends hands-on product design, standards-driven engineering, and cross-functional project leadership. You’ll own designs from concept through production, ensuring performance, manufacturability, and compliance with key industry standards.

- Product Design & Engineering
- Design IT racks, network enclosures, from concept through production, based on customer specifications.
- Develop product specifications, layouts, and detailed CAD models (parametric design)
- Create fabrication drawings for sheet metal components (bending, punching, welding, finishing)
- Design for manufacturability, cost efficiency, and scalability
- Support enclosure and accessory packaging solutions
Standards & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards including:
- EIA-310 (rack standards)
- UL 2416, UL 60950, and related UL/IEC/CSA requirements
- Support product certification efforts and agency submissions
- Validate designs against thermal, structural, and safety requirements
Testing & Validation
- Plan and execute design verification testing (mechanical, thermal, environmental)
- Interpret test results and refine designs accordingly
- Support prototype builds and pilot production
Project Ownership
- Lead or contribute to cross-functional project teams
- Manage timelines, deliverables, and engineering milestones
- Provide regular updates on schedule, cost, and risks to Project Management
- Drive engineering changes (ECNs), documentation, and release processes
Documentation & Systems
- Support the creation and maintenance:
- Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Material master data
- Installation and field modification instructions
- Support ERP systems (SAP preferred) for product data management
- Work closely with global design engineering team, local manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams
- Interface with customers to understand application requirements
- Identify opportunities for product improvement, cost reduction, and standardization
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field
- 4–6+ years of relevant design experience (enclosures, racks, or sheet metal products preferred)
- Strong CAD skills (PTC Creo / Windchill preferred)
- Experience with sheet metal design and manufacturing processes
- Preferred experience performing FEA simulations (structural, thermal, or vibration) to validate and optimize designs
- Understanding of IP/NEMA enclosure ratings
- EIA-310 rack standards
- UL 2416, UL 60950 (or similar safety standards)
- General UL, IEC, CSA compliance frameworks
- Working knowledge of Open Compute Project (OCP) rack designs, architectures, and specifications is a plus
- Design of IT/data center infrastructure or network racks
- Experience designing or supporting OCP-based rack systems or hyperscale data center architecture
- Experience with DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and risk-based design methodologies
- Experience working with global engineering teams
- Familiarity with SAP or similar ERP systems
- Exposure to thermal management or power distribution systems
