What is a mechanical development engineer?

Mechanical Development Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test mechanical devices and systems. They work on creating new products or improving existing ones by applying principles of engineering, physics, and material science. Their responsibilities often include prototyping, analyzing product performance, and collaborating with other engineers to ensure that products meet required specifications and standards. Mechanical Development Engineers play a crucial role in industries such as automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, and consumer goods. Their work helps bring innovative mechanical solutions to market efficiently and safely.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a mechanical development engineer?

To thrive as a Mechanical Development Engineer, you need strong skills in mechanical design, analysis, and problem-solving, typically supported by a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), simulation tools (like ANSYS), and familiarity with manufacturing processes are commonly required. Excellent teamwork, communication, and project management skills help you effectively collaborate and drive projects forward. These competencies ensure the development of reliable, innovative products that meet performance, quality, and timeline expectations.

What are some common challenges mechanical development engineers face when transitioning prototypes to mass production?

Mechanical Development Engineers often encounter challenges when moving a prototype into large-scale manufacturing, such as ensuring that the design can be produced cost-effectively, maintaining product quality, and adhering to tight schedules. Adjustments may be required to meet manufacturing constraints, supply chain limitations, or regulatory standards. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, including manufacturing, quality assurance, and supply chain, is crucial to address these issues efficiently and achieve a successful product launch.

What is the difference between Mechanical Development Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectMechanical Development EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
Primary FocusDeveloping and testing new mechanical products and prototypesCreating detailed designs and specifications for mechanical components
Work EnvironmentR&D labs, prototyping workshopsDesign offices, CAD environments
Required SkillsPrototyping, testing, material selectionCAD, technical drawing, design analysis
Common Industry UsageProduct innovation, research projectsManufacturing, product development

While both roles involve mechanical engineering expertise, Mechanical Development Engineers focus on creating and testing new products, whereas Mechanical Design Engineers concentrate on designing detailed parts and assemblies. The roles often overlap but differ mainly in their emphasis on development versus detailed design tasks.

Job Title: Mechanical Development Engineer, Design

Location: Davidson, NC

About Us: Imagine a company with technology leadership of over 160 years, yet it operates with the energy of a startup. Ingersoll Rand has dedicated itself to Making Life Better for its employees, customers, shareholders, and planets. We produce innovative and missionโ€‘critical flow creation and life science technologies โ€“ from compressors to precision handling of liquids, gasses, and powers โ€“ to increase industrial productivity, efficiency, and sustainability. Supported by over 80+ brands, our products are used in various endโ€‘markets including life sciences, food and beverage, clean energy, industrial manufacturing, infrastructure, and more. Across the globe, weโ€™re driving growth with an entrepreneurial spirit and ownership mindset.

Job Overview: Step into a highly visible Mechanical Development Engineer role where your work directly shapes the core technology behind rotary screw air compressors. This is not a narrow design seat or a pure project management roleโ€”it is a handsโ€‘on, technical project leadership opportunity for an engineer who can take complex mechanical products from concept through design, validation, launch, and production handoff. In this role, you will own development projects tied to rotary screw airends, one of the most critical subsystems within the compressor. You will work through phaseโ€‘gate new product development, apply engineering principles and analytical tools, solve varied mechanical design challenges, and help drive decisions around performance, reliability, cost, timing, and manufacturability. The work spans close clearances, tight tolerances, rotating equipment, bearing systems, gears, GD&T, CAD exposure, test planning, and technical analysisโ€”while also requiring the communication and leadership skills to keep crossโ€‘functional teams aligned. This is an ideal opportunity for a wellโ€‘rounded mechanical engineer who enjoys being the โ€œSwiss Army knifeโ€ on complex technical projects: technical enough to dig into the design, analytical enough to solve hard problems, and collaborative enough to lead project calls, design reviews, schedules, and crossโ€‘functional execution. You will also manage shifting priorities across multiple development efforts while partnering with teams in a global engineering environment.

Responsibilities Product Development & Execution
  • Lead mechanical design and development for rotary screw airends from concept through production
  • Define specifications and conduct technical design reviews
  • Execute projects to meet cost, schedule, and performance targets
  • Perform engineering analysis, trade studies, and solution selection
Project & Team Coordination
  • Develop and maintain project plans, schedules, and resource needs
  • Coordinate with crossโ€‘functional teams to achieve common goals
  • Support Engineering Manager and project leaders in achieving goals
Testing & Validation
  • Develop and execute test plans with laboratory teams
  • Analyze performance data and generate technical reports
  • Support root cause analysis and problem resolution
Crossโ€‘Functional & External Support
  • Provide technical support to manufacturing, sourcing, quality, and marketing
  • Collaborate with suppliers on design and technical requirements
  • Assist with warranty investigations and field issue resolution
  • Maintain design documentation compliant with ISO procedures
  • Support BOM and engineering change release processes in PLM systems
  • Apply lessons learned and FMEA to improve future designs
  • Stay current with engineering tools and best practices
Requirements
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 7+ years of relevant mechanical engineering experience
  • 5+ years of mechanical design and technical problemโ€‘solving experience involving mechanical systems, tight tolerances, close clearances, and mechanical design parameters
  • Demonstrated experience with engineering project leadership and execution, completing two or more full project cycles
  • Experience developing test plans, analyzing results, and using technical analysis to support engineering decisions
Core Competencies
  • Strong analytical, problemโ€‘solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage shifting priorities in a global, crossโ€‘functional environment
  • Working knowledge of PLM and ERP systems in manufacturing
  • 3D CAD experience, ideally Creo
  • GD&T knowledge with ANSI Y14.5 application
  • Familiarity with stageโ€‘gate product development
  • Working knowledge of DFMEA, DOE, and DFM/A
