Job Description

The Vice President, Medical Affairs at Deciphera is for a strategically minded and operationally savvy individual. As a member of the Clinical-Medical Leadership Team, the individual will develop and lead our integrated medical/scientific function and thereby greatly advance Deciphera's mission to become a fully integrated, pharmaceutical company that transforms the lives of cancer patients and their families around the world .

(S)he will support the evolving commercial needs of the organization by being a pivotal interface between Deciphera's Medical and Commercial organizations. Through internal collaboration with Clinical Development, Market Access, and Commercial, the individual will support Desciphera's efforts to maximize the clinical benefit and commercial value of our portfolio. (S)he will partner externally with key opinion leaders and healthcare professionals to optimize patient care and treatment outcomes through compliant, and evidence-based decisions.

The individual will provide strategic, medical leadership in cross-functional teams to assure that our business needs are met at the highest standards with unquestionable integrity. Over time, he or she will develop a high-performing organization of internally and externally facing professionals. The ideal candidate should enjoy working in a good natured, high energy, ever-improving office environment, with highly motivated and experienced colleagues, while interfacing comfortably with the executive leadership team. The individual understands how to efficiently leverage the resources of an emerging biopharma company to successfully manage multiple programs across our oncologic therapeutic pipeline. An integral part of this role is fostering strong relationships with international academic healthcare professionals and medical organizations to keep the organization informed of changing medical practice and unmet medical needs.

The Vice President, Medical Affairs will:
  • Take full ownership to shape and lead the company's medical affairs organization to achieve corporate goals and objectives while keeping in compliance with applicable policies and regulations
  • Establish professional relationships with the medical community and exchange scientific knowledge with global and regional key opinion leaders to identify current and future business opportunities and emerging medical and health care practices
  • Lead the development, implementation and analysis of potential Phase 3B and 4 Studies and programs, and execute Life Cycle Management plans
  • Champion and lead the development of Medical Affairs plans
  • Is capable of communicating Deciphera's research platform and targeted approach to drug development to relevant audiences

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Development of Medical Affairs plans including, but not limited to, Publication Planning, Medical Advisory Boards, Educational Programs, Training, and Conferences
  • Development and execution of Investigator-Initiated & Sponsored Research strategies and review process
  • Develop and implement methods and procedures for developing scientific presentations to individuals and groups of strategic importance
  • Establish and execute a strategic publication and congress plan
  • Design and implementation of a process for responding to external requests for information regarding compounds in development and approved products
  • Develop a strong field-based Medical Science Liasons organization to support patient care and access
  • Oversee speaker programs on disease state, current therapeutics and patient care gaps
  • Collaborate internally with clinical and regulatory departments to support the planning, execution, and management of clinical trial activities e.g. through site identification
  • Partner with Marketing/Commercial to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant preparation and review of promotional and educational material
  • Work with internal team to develop key messages on disease state, MOA, target product profile, HEOR modeling, molecular diagnosis, etc.
  • Review relevant science and competitive landscape and support the evaluation of the health economics landscape in each disease area and outcomes research plans
  • Responsible for design and implementation with input from clinical development and operations and regulatory affairs of an early access program following pivotal study presentations


Qualifications

Education, Competencies and Skills:
  • MD, PharmD, or life-science PhD is required in combination with experience in oncology and/or rare diseases
  • A proven track record of medical affairs or clinical research leadership
  • Proven capacity to implement, monitor, and logistically manage strategic action plans in alignment with the company's global initiatives and integrated communications program
  • Proven ability to organize and lead expert Scientific Advisory Panels and effectively communicate scientific and medical data results/information to internal and external stakeholders
  • An innovative mind that can take the strategic business perspective to successfully, accelerate and maximizing the commercial value of Deciphera's innovation while accounting for future consequences and trends
  • Ability to execute deliverables with input and assistance from internal and external resources
  • Experience in working with cooperative groups and networks to conceptualize, design, and conduct complex clinical trials
  • An understanding of regulatory agency guidelines and practices, such as good clinical practices (GCP), FDA regulations and guidelines, new drug commercialization and business practices, resourcing and budgeting, and the ability to negotiate with these groups
  • Ability to anticipate and plan for potential issues, threats, and concerns regarding our business and pipeline, as well as address emerging issues immediately
  • An entrepreneurial and hands-on attitude and highly self-motivated
  • This position will have a strong outward-facing presence in the US and global oncology community, and require domestic and international travel.
