Job description

Overview
The College of Agriculture at Auburn University is excited to begin the search for an Academic Advisor I, II, or III to support student success through academic advising, career guidance, and student development initiatives.
In this role, you will help students navigate their academic journey by advising on course selection, degree requirements, areas of concentration, and post-graduation plans. Working closely with students, faculty, and campus partners, you will play a key role in helping students achieve their educational and career goals.
Depending on experience and qualifications, the selected candidate may be hired at the Advisor I, II, or III level.
  • Academic Advisor I: Under immediate supervision, provides academic advising and guidance related to course selection, degree requirements, and educational planning to help students meet their academic goals.
  • Academic Advisor II: Under general supervision, advises students while developing and overseeing advising functions. Applies comprehensive knowledge of advising practices and may serve as a mentor or trainer to new advisors and support staff.
  • Academic Advisor III: Under minimal supervision, provides comprehensive academic, career, and student support services. Oversees the consistent application of advising policies and procedures, resolves complex advising situations, serves as a mentor and trainer to other advisors, and may act as a team leader or supervise advising staff in the absence of the direct supervisor while maintaining an active advising caseload.

This position offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on student success while contributing to a supportive and student-centered academic environment within the College of Agriculture.
Responsibilities
  • Advise Students: Conduct registration advising sessions, pre-advising workshops, and maintain communication through various channels while holding office hours for advising appointments.
  • Implement Advising Policies and Procedures: Ensure compliance with university policies and procedures related to academics, graduation, orientation, admissions, Title IX, FERPA, accessibility, and VA benefits.
  • Oversee Registration Process: Manage the registration process, including Tiger Scheduler, withdrawals, schedule adjustments, and pre-requisites for students in the Department of Animal Science.
  • Utilize Curriculum Software: Learn and use curriculum software such as Bulletin, Degree Works, and participate in the Curriculum Committee, approving course substitutions and updating Degree Works.
  • Utilize Campus Software: Use various advising-related software tools (Advise Assist, Banner, Canvas, Salesforce, Smartsheet, Degree Works, Workflow) for tasks such as managing office hours, inputting data, creating content, and tracking processes.
  • Serve on Committees: Participate in college and university committees, including the Advisor Caucus and Curriculum Committee.
  • Manage Student Records and Data: Oversee academic standing, manage student data in multiple systems, ensure FERPA compliance, and handle major and minor changes.
  • Create and Implement Retention Strategies: Develop and execute strategies to retain students.
  • Assist with Orientation Sessions: Organize and attend Camp War Eagle and SOS sessions, advising students and parents, and assisting with registration.
  • Manage Student Crises: Coordinate with Auburn Cares on student issues (mental health, Title IX, academic, inter-personal), and provide support for academic and personal challenges.
  • Communicate with Stakeholders: Engage with parents, families, and campus partners while adhering to FERPA regulations.
  • Engage in Professional Development: Attend professional development sessions, conferences, and workshops at Auburn, regionally, and nationally/internationally, and serve in leadership roles.

Qualifications
Level I:
Bachelor's degree - no specific discipline.
Level II:
Bachelor's degree and 3 years of experience with primary focus of student-related advising or academic counseling.
OR
A Master's degree with 2 years of experience of student-related advising or academic counseling.
Level III:
Bachelor's degree and 5 years of experience with primary focus of student-related advising or academic counseling.
OR
A Master's degree with 4 years of experience of student-related advising or academic counseling.
For positions that require the employee to teach, a Master's degree will be required.
