Academic Advisor III

Student Success

University Advisement Center

The Academic Advisor III performs advanced-level academic advising and leadership functions in support of student success, retention, and timely degree completion. This role leads complex advising initiatives, interprets and applies university and Board of Regents policies, and supports academic program development. The Academic Advisor III serves as a subject matter expert, mentor, and resource for advising staff and university partners while contributing to strategic advising operations and student success outcomes.

The Academic Advisor III plays a critical role in supporting student persistence and degree attainment through advanced academic advising, student advocacy, data-informed decision-making, and collaboration with academic and administrative units. This position may support any University Advisement Center location, team, student population, program, or service area as needed.

This position is integral to the daily operations of the University Advisement Center and may support in-person, virtual, or hybrid services. The successful candidate is expected to maintain regular office hours and provide dependable support to assigned students, programs, and advising initiatives. The position may be assigned to support any UAC location, team, student population, or service area as operational needs require.

The University Advisement Center is seeking to recruit an Academic Advisor III. This position performs advanced level academic advisement functions such as facilitating academic program development, advisement, interpretation and implementation of university policies and procedures.

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

Academic Advising and Student Support

  • Provide advanced academic advising to prospective and enrolled students regarding degree requirements, course selection, academic standing, progression, and graduation planning.

  • Interpret and communicate University and Board of Regents policies, procedures, and academic requirements to students, faculty, staff, and families.

  • Monitor student academic progress, registration activity, and degree milestones using advising technologies and data tools.

Records Evaluation and Academic Processes

  • Evaluate and process complex academic matters, including transfer credits, academic appeals, readmission requests, graduation certifications, and financial aid reinstatement.

  • Review and ensure the accuracy and compliance of student records, curriculum requirements, advising documentation, and graduation progression.

Leadership, Training, and Program Coordination

  • Collaborate with faculty, academic departments, and university partners regarding curriculum changes, assessment efforts, policy compliance, strategic planning, academic policy updates, and program development that improve student retentions and graduation outcomes.

  • Lead and support advising operations by training, mentoring, onboarding, and providing functional supervision to advisors and student assistants

Qualifications
:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree and either 1) 6 months experience as "Academic Advisor II" at GSU (University Advisement Center or other GSU advising department) or 2) five years of related experience, or a combination of education and related experience.

Preferred Hiring Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • Experience in academic advising, student success, retention, enrollment management, or student affairs within higher education.
  • Experience leading advising initiatives, specialized programs, or student success projects.
  • Experience mentoring, training, or providing leadership to professional staff.
  • Proficiency with Banner, Degree Works, EAB Navigate, or similar student information and advising systems.
  • Knowledge of academic advising theories, student development principles, and student retention best practices.
  • Excellent oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to assess complex student situations and develop effective solutions.
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success, equity, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
