At the college level, students typically choose an academic advisor in their major department, although the school may also have general academic advisors who assist students to understand graduation requirements and course selection and help them identify overall education goals.

Academic Advisor (Jonesboro Campus)
Arkansas State University-Newport
The Academic Advisor is primarily responsible for advising students throughout their enrollment at ASUN. This includes supporting students in the development of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs they will need to succeed. Using holistic advising approaches and student coaching methodologies, advisors will support students toward completion of identified academic, career, and personal goals. The Academic Advisor will also refer students to appropriate offices and individuals who can assist them in overcoming barriers to success. The primary focus of Academic Advising is to develop intentional, personal relationships with students, which are designed to enhance student engagement and academic success.
Essential Functions
This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases related duties may also be assigned. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Maintain an understanding of ASUN's programs, policies, and administrative processes within assigned programs to assist advisees with understanding degree requirements and building schedules.
Implement assessment of academic advising systems that make efficient use of the EAB tools (SAP Academic Plans, advising rosters, registration for special groups, add/drops, financial aid warning, advising progressions check-ins, transfer check-ins, and special populations throughout the semester for a more holistic advising experience, etc.).
Ensure that the caseload of students develop individualized academic plans using Degree Works and Navigate. These systems are used to identify the students' current academic status and steps required to reach their academic goals, including working with faculty and other college personnel to determine academic interventions and available resources.
After the student has completed 12 credit hours or more with a professional advisor, the professional advisor will ensure warm handoff to the student's new faculty advisor. This includes sharing notes or any pertinent information regarding the student being added to the faculty advisor's load.
Coordinate with faculty to encourage and appropriately manage early alerts to ensure students are receiving timely interventions with the goal of preventing students from entering SAP suspension.
Assist students who are on SAP or Academic Probation by referring them to the appropriate Financial Aid Counselor. This may include assisting the student with completing a revised academic plan with the goal of helping the student achieve a satisfactory appeal process.
Develop and build student relationships and aid in the mentoring, advising and supporting role to encourage persistence and completion of academic goals.
Proactively manage the student caseload by scheduling and conducting sessions with students in multiple communication channels (e.g. in-person, phone, email, text, virtual meetings).
Participate in regular advising meetings and training related to academic advising, system changes/updates, and overall student success.
Participate in at least one professional development training per academic semester.
Be available to students during scheduled hours (which may include some evenings or virtual office hours, weekends during peak enrollment periods, and when urgent needs arise). Comply with vacation black-out periods during peak enrollment times.
Demonstrate the ability to take initiative in a fast-paced work environment and meet deadlines. Maintain positive working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds while working effectively to complete all required tasks.
Commit to continuous improvement. In consultation with the Director of Advising, develop an individualized development plan and proactively seek out opportunities for professional development and improvement. Actively participate in all required training.
Assist with New Student Orientation, group advising events, and other college events as necessary.
Other Job Duties and Responsibilities
Inter-campus travel as needed during peak advising seasons.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Each Academic Advisor is responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner which fosters teamwork and provides leadership to students and peers.
