What are some common challenges faced in a temporary digital accessibility role, and how can they be addressed?

In a temporary digital accessibility role, one common challenge is quickly adapting to the organization's specific digital platforms and accessibility standards. Since the position is short-term, there is often limited time to familiarize yourself with internal tools and workflows. To address this, it’s important to proactively seek out documentation, ask clarifying questions early, and collaborate closely with permanent team members such as developers and UX designers. Effective communication and a willingness to learn on the fly can help you make a meaningful impact within a limited timeframe.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Digital Accessibility Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Digital Accessibility Specialist, you need a solid understanding of web accessibility standards (like WCAG), experience with HTML/CSS, and familiarity with assistive technologies, often supported by relevant training or certifications. Proficiency with tools such as screen readers, accessibility evaluation software, and content management systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help you identify issues and advocate for accessible solutions. These skills are crucial to ensure digital content is usable by all individuals, meeting legal requirements and fostering inclusivity.

What is a Temporary Digital Accessibility Specialist?

A Temporary Digital Accessibility Specialist is a professional who is hired for a limited period to assess, improve, and ensure that digital content and platforms, such as websites and applications, are accessible to people with disabilities. Their responsibilities typically include conducting accessibility audits, recommending solutions, and helping organizations comply with standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and legal requirements such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The 'temporary' aspect means that these roles are often project-based or to fill short-term needs, such as during a website redesign or compliance deadline. They work closely with web developers, designers, and content creators to implement accessible solutions.

Job description

Full-time, Exempt
Background
Internationally recognized as a premier museum and research center, the Frick is known for its distinguished Old Master paintings and outstanding examples of European sculpture and decorative arts.
The collection originated with Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919), who bequeathed his home, paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts to the public for their enjoyment. The institution's holdings-which encompass masterworks from the Renaissance through the nineteenth century-have grown over the decades, more than doubling in size since the opening of the museum in 1935. A critical component of the institution is the Frick Art Research Library, founded in 1920 by Helen Clay Frick, daughter of the museum's founder. Recognized as one of the world's top art history research centers, it has served students, scholars, and members of the public free of charge for generations.
The Frick has undergone a comprehensive renovation and was open in a temporary home, Frick Madison, from 2020 through early 2024, while renovations were underway at the mansion on 70th Street. In addition to special exhibition galleries and education spaces, we have added enhanced visitor amenities and accessible spaces. The museum and Art Research Library reopened to the public in April 2025.
Workplace Culture
We pride ourselves on promoting an open and welcoming workplace culture that supports work-life balance. The Frick strives to provide our employees with competitive salaries and exceptional benefits in a beautiful and pleasant work setting, while offering an excellent opportunity to appreciate some of the world's finest works of art.
The Frick Collection provides equal opportunity to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to personal characteristics such as race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, pregnancy, genetic information, military or veteran status, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, marital and civil partnership/union status, alienage or citizenship status, creed, genetic predisposition or carrier status, unemployment status, familial status, domestic violence, sexual violence or stalking victim status, caregiver status, or other characteristics protected by law. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including, but not limited to, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leaves of absence, compensation, and training.
Position Summary
The Web Accessibility Specialist will be an integral part of the Digital Department's Web Team, responsible for ensuring that digital content is accessible to users of all abilities and complies with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). The ideal candidate will communicate effectively with various departments and vendors to develop and apply solutions to meet accessibility standards. This position will audit and identify accessibility issues across all platforms, implement remediation strategies, and integrate accessibility into museum processes. This role will perform user testing including keyboard-only navigation, screen reader testing, and other assistive technologies to provide a high-quality user experience consistent with the Frick's values. As part of the Web team, the Web Accessibility Specialist will support various digital publishing projects, help meet project deadlines and work with the Frick's content management system (Drupal), various web-based platforms, e-commerce platforms, email marketing campaigns, and other assigned initiatives, as needed.
