How does a Senior Digital Accessibility specialist typically collaborate with design and development teams to ensure accessible digital products?

Senior Digital Accessibility specialists often work closely with UX/UI designers and developers from the early stages of a project to ensure accessibility is integrated into the design and code. This collaboration involves reviewing wireframes, conducting accessibility audits, providing feedback, and recommending solutions for issues like color contrast, keyboard navigation, and screen reader compatibility. They may also lead training sessions and create guidelines to help team members understand and implement accessibility best practices. Open communication and regular check-ins are key to ensuring accessibility remains a priority throughout the development lifecycle.

What is a Senior Digital Accessibility Specialist?

A Senior Digital Accessibility Specialist is a professional who ensures that digital products, such as websites and mobile applications, are accessible to people with disabilities. They apply accessibility standards, like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), to identify and address barriers in digital content. Their work includes conducting audits, providing recommendations, training teams, and collaborating with designers and developers to create inclusive digital experiences. In addition, they often lead accessibility initiatives and help organizations comply with legal requirements such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Digital Accessibility Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Digital Accessibility Specialist, you need expertise in web accessibility standards (such as WCAG), strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, and ARIA, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with accessibility evaluation tools like Axe, WAVE, and screen readers, as well as certifications like CPACC or WAS from IAAP, are commonly required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and a collaborative mindset help you advocate for accessibility and work effectively with diverse teams. These skills are vital to ensure digital products are inclusive, compliant with legal standards, and usable by people of all abilities.
