Digital Accessibility Specialists are permanent or long-term employees with advanced certifications, responsible for ongoing accessibility strategy and compliance within organizations.

What are some common challenges faced in a temporary digital accessibility role, and how can they be addressed?

In a temporary digital accessibility role, one common challenge is quickly adapting to the organization's specific digital platforms and accessibility standards. Since the position is short-term, there is often limited time to familiarize yourself with internal tools and workflows. To address this, it’s important to proactively seek out documentation, ask clarifying questions early, and collaborate closely with permanent team members such as developers and UX designers. Effective communication and a willingness to learn on the fly can help you make a meaningful impact within a limited timeframe.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Temporary Digital Accessibility Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Temporary Digital Accessibility Specialist, you need a solid understanding of web accessibility standards (like WCAG), experience with HTML/CSS, and familiarity with assistive technologies, often supported by relevant training or certifications. Proficiency with tools such as screen readers, accessibility evaluation software, and content management systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help you identify issues and advocate for accessible solutions. These skills are crucial to ensure digital content is usable by all individuals, meeting legal requirements and fostering inclusivity.

What is a Temporary Digital Accessibility Specialist?

A Temporary Digital Accessibility Specialist is a professional who is hired for a limited period to assess, improve, and ensure that digital content and platforms, such as websites and applications, are accessible to people with disabilities. Their responsibilities typically include conducting accessibility audits, recommending solutions, and helping organizations comply with standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and legal requirements such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The 'temporary' aspect means that these roles are often project-based or to fill short-term needs, such as during a website redesign or compliance deadline. They work closely with web developers, designers, and content creators to implement accessible solutions.

Job Title: Digital Accessibility & UX Compliance Analyst
Role Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Digital Accessibility Analyst to champion inclusive design and ensure our digital ecosystem meets the highest standards of accessibility. In this role, you will perform comprehensive reviews of digital content, documents, and user experiences against established global standards (such as WCAG). You will act as a practical advisor to design, development, and content teams, providing actionable guidance to reduce compliance risk and improve usability for all users. The ideal candidate is a collaborative problem-solver who can navigate complex digital projects while maintaining a focus on long-term accessibility health.
Key Responsibilities
• Accessibility Testing & Review: Execute rigorous accessibility audits across digital platforms and document libraries using industry-standard tools and assistive technologies (e.g., screen readers).
• Cross-Functional Guidance: Provide clear, technical, and practical recommendations to designers and developers to ensure new features are "accessible by design."
• Compliance Maintenance: Lead initiatives focused on remediating legacy content and optimizing document workflows to reduce long-term maintenance and legal risk.
• Operational Coordination: Assist in managing the accessibility intake process, including documenting findings, generating compliance reports, and coordinating with external vendors during high-demand periods.
• UX Integration: Support UX research and usability testing efforts to ensure that "compliant" designs are also highly "usable" for people with disabilities.
• Project Support: Contribute to enterprise-wide inclusion initiatives and special projects as the digital accessibility subject matter expert.
Qualifications & Requirements
• Education: Bachelor's Degree or a minimum of 4 years of professional experience in a corporate environment.
• Professional Experience: At least 2 years of experience working specifically in digital experience design, UX research, or usability testing.
• Technical Skills:
• Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), particularly in creating accessible document templates.
• Familiarity with WCAG guidelines and common assistive technology tools.
• Interpersonal Skills:
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to explain complex standards to non-technical stakeholders.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects independently.
• Proven ability to function effectively within a team environment, sharing accountability and roles. Equal Opportunity Employer / Disabled / Protected Veterans
