What is technology consulting?

Technology consulting is a professional service that helps organizations use technology to achieve their business goals. Technology consultants assess clients' current technology systems, identify areas for improvement, and recommend solutions such as new software, hardware, or digital strategies. They may also assist with implementing these solutions, managing change, and ensuring that technology investments align with the company's overall strategy. Technology consultants work in a variety of industries and often specialize in areas like cybersecurity, cloud computing, or digital transformation.

What does a technology consultant do?

A technology consultant advises organizations on how to use technology to meet their business goals. They analyze existing systems, recommend solutions, and assist with implementation, often requiring knowledge of IT infrastructure, software, and project management. Their work involves problem-solving, client communication, and staying current with technological advancements.

How does a technology consultant typically collaborate with clients and internal teams during a project?

Technology consultants work closely with both clients and internal teams throughout a project’s lifecycle. They begin by meeting with clients to understand their business challenges and technology needs, then collaborate with internal specialists—such as developers, analysts, and project managers—to design tailored solutions. Frequent communication, workshops, and status updates are essential to ensure alignment and transparency. This collaborative approach helps deliver solutions that meet client expectations while leveraging the expertise of cross-functional teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Technology Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Technology Consultant, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of IT systems, and often a degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools, enterprise software (like SAP or Salesforce), and relevant certifications (such as PMP or ITIL) is typically expected. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and client management abilities help set top consultants apart. These competencies are crucial for delivering effective solutions, building client trust, and ensuring successful implementation of technology strategies.

Is tech consulting a high paying job?

Technology consulting is generally considered a high-paying profession, especially for those with specialized skills in areas like cloud computing, cybersecurity, or data analytics. Salaries vary based on experience, certifications, and location, but top consultants often earn six-figure incomes and bonuses. The role typically requires strong problem-solving skills and familiarity with industry tools and methodologies.

Is AI going to replace consultants?

Technology consulting involves advising organizations on technology strategies and solutions. While AI can automate certain tasks and improve efficiency, it is unlikely to fully replace consultants, as human expertise, strategic thinking, and client interaction remain essential in delivering value and tailored solutions.

Job description

Job Family:
Technology Consulting
Travel Required:
Up to 75%+
Clearance Required:
None
Guidehouse's Health Technology Consulting (HTC) practice is looking for an Associate Director to lead revenue cycle technology engagements across our Commercial Health client portfolio. This person will serve as a senior advisor to health system executives, guiding clients through the full lifecycle of revenue cycle technology work: strategy, platform assessment, implementation oversight, and post-live optimization. The revenue cycle technology market is saturated with generalists. Our clients need someone who has been inside these platforms, who understands what the configuration decisions actually mean for billing operations, and who can speak honestly about where the technology falls short and what to do about it.
This is a client-facing leadership role. The Associate Director will own executive relationships, lead engagement teams, contribute to business development, and bring deep technical credibility to every conversation. We expect this person to have the most Epic revenue cycle knowledge in the room most of the time. Oracle Health, Meditech Expanse, and athenahealth are relevant secondary platforms, and experience across any of them strengthens a candidacy.
What You Will Do:
Lead Client Engagements
You will serve as the senior Guidehouse presence on revenue cycle technology accounts. That means owning the relationship with the CFO, VP of Revenue Cycle, and CDIO, managing workstreams across a team, and being accountable for the quality and direction of our work. Engagements vary: some involve assessing a health system's current platform configuration and identifying revenue leakage; others involve guiding a client through a post-live stabilization after a difficult Epic go-live; others are full optimization programs aimed at reducing denial rates, improving clean claim rates, or restructuring CBO operations. You will be expected to bring a point of view into every room, not just facilitate a process.
Deliver on Revenue Cycle Technology Depth
Guidehouse's value in this market depends on our consultants knowing the platforms at a level that earns client trust quickly. For this role, that means Epic revenue cycle first: Resolute HB and PB, Grand Central, Prelude, Charge Router, Claim Edit, denial workqueue design, and the operational logic that ties configuration decisions to billing outcomes. You will translate that platform knowledge into practical recommendations for clients across the revenue cycle continuum, from front-end patient access through back-end billing and collections.
Clients also bring us Oracle Health, Meditech Expanse, and athenahealth environments, and this person should be able to contribute meaningfully in those contexts as well, even if Epic is the primary center of gravity.
Grow the Practice
This role carries business development responsibility. You will identify expansion opportunities within existing accounts, support proposal development, represent Guidehouse at industry events including HFMA and ViVE, and contribute to the firm's external point of view on revenue cycle technology. The expectation is that you will build and maintain a pipeline over time, not just deliver on what is already sold.
Develop the Team
You will lead engagement teams from Analyst through Senior Consultant, providing active coaching and substantive feedback. Developing the revenue cycle technology expertise of the people around you is part of the job, not a side responsibility.
What We Are Looking For
The right candidate has spent meaningful time inside revenue cycle technology, either as a consultant, an implementation specialist, or an operations leader, and has accumulated enough platform depth that they can identify problems that others miss. They are comfortable in front of executives and confident enough in their own expertise to push back when client assumptions are wrong.
What You Will Need:
  • Eight to twelve years of combined experience in health IT consulting, EHR implementation, or revenue cycle operations, with prior consulting firm experience strongly preferred
  • Deep Epic revenue cycle expertise, including certification in one or more modules such as Resolute HB, Resolute PB, Charge Router, Grand Central, or Prelude, and a minimum of three years working in Epic revenue cycle environments
  • Meaningful experience with at least one of Oracle Health, Meditech Expanse, or athenahealth in a revenue cycle context
  • A track record of managing complex engagements with C-suite client exposure
  • Experience leading and developing consulting staff across multi-workstream engagements
  • Fluency in revenue cycle performance metrics including DNFB, DCFB, A/R days, first-pass rate, denial rate, clean claim rate, and net collection rate
  • Understanding of how payer and regulatory requirements intersect with EHR configuration, including CMS billing rules, prior authorization workflows, and value-based contracting structures
  • A bachelor's degree at minimum; a graduate degree in health informatics, business administration, or a related field is a plus

What Would Be Nice To Have:
  • Graduate degree in health informatics, business administration, public health, or a related field
  • Experience working across payer and provider client environments
  • Familiarity with healthcare IT standards, regulatory requirements, and compliance considerations relevant to EHR implementation and optimization
  • Experience supporting or contributing to digital transformation, AI integration, or analytics strategy within health system engagements

The annual salary range for this position is $135,000.00-$225,000.00. Compensation decisions depend on a wide range of factors, including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, security clearances, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
What We Offer:
Guidehouse offers a comprehensive, total rewards package that includes competitive compensation and a flexible benefits package that reflects our commitment to creating a diverse and supportive workplace.
Benefits include:
  • Medical, Rx, Dental & Vision Insurance
  • Personal and Family Sick Time & Company Paid Holidays
  • Position may be eligible for a discretionary variable incentive bonus
  • Parental Leave and Adoption Assistance
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Basic Life & Supplemental Life
  • Health Savings Account, Dental/Vision & Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Short-Term & Long-Term Disability
  • Student Loan PayDown
  • Tuition Reimbursement, Personal Development & Learning Opportunities
  • Skills Development & Certifications
  • Employee Referral Program
  • Corporate Sponsored Events & Community Outreach
  • Emergency Back-Up Childcare Program
