Job Description
AbbVie's Business Evolution Strategic Development (BESD) Team is responsible for developing and executing forward-looking strategic plans that will ensure AbbVie's readiness for, and ability to successfully navigate, potential changes in the healthcare environment such as Most Favored Nations (MFN) and other price controls.
PURPOSE OF ROLE
The Director, BESD will support the development and implementation of forward-thinking business and policy strategies that not only navigate today's policy and market landscape but also anticipate and adapt to future shifts. The Director's innovative ideas and strategic insights will directly support the advancement of AbbVie's mission and goals. They will lead and/or support cross-functional workstreams to optimize the development of innovative and actionable strategies for AbbVie in a changing external environment leveraging strong collaborative relationships, data and analytics, a strong ability to connect dots and bring complex pieces together to form cohesive, high impact strategies. They must bring an enterprise mindset and deep understanding of, and ideas around the drug pricing environment, and what it means for our business, our pipeline and our stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Strategic Initiatives: Spearhead the development and execution of innovative and competitive strategies that integrate environment shaping with business readiness to navigate pharmaceutical price reform in the US today and in the future, collaborating tirelessly with cross-functional and external experts.
  • Strategic Collaboration: Partner with critical stakeholders across Government Affairs, Market Access, Legal, Finance, and Corporate Affairs across geographies to ensure cohesive alignment towards enterprise goals. Drive strategies forward to achieve targeted objectives and milestones.
  • Environmental Analysis and Horizon scanning: Together with key functions and external partners, monitor external political, regulatory, legislative, and market dynamics and develop impactful insight reports on evolving themes to help foster innovative solutions and strategic decision making.
  • Business Value Evaluation: Identify opportunities to deliver actionable recommendations that enhance competitiveness and business impact. Support the building of compelling business cases to accelerate strategic solutions.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Develop effective presentations that enable strategic communications of issues, pivotal updates, and business cases to cross-functional leaders; maintain productive relationships with internal stakeholders, ensuring alignment and preparedness.

  • Execution: Ability to deliver on initiatives with a sense of urgency and agility, with an ability to pivot when and where needed to account for shifting external and internal dynamics.
  • Action and Accountability: Advance strategy execution across workstreams. Inspire engagement and make quick, informed decisions amidst shifting market dynamics, continually support and guide teams to overcome obstacles and challenges.
  • Influence: Persuasively influence various stakeholders and partners directly and indirectly to achieve strategic goals.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Collaboratively work with internal and external experts to integrate leading insights into strategy development and ensure seamless cross-functional execution.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA or other advanced degree in relevant field preferred.
  • Minimum of 6-8 years of progressively responsible experience in government affairs, public policy, market access, or business strategy, with a pharma company, healthcare consulting firm, government agency, or think tank.
  • Strong business acumen with demonstrated experience in strategically and creatively shaping policy and business outcomes, with a keen understanding of what it takes to do so effectively.
  • Exceptional communications, critical thinking and interpersonal skills, strong ability to influence without authority, the ability to speak and write persuasively and with clarity, strong organizational skills, flexibility, and adaptability to changing requirements, resourcefulness, strong attention to detail, a proven track record of being able to work drive towards deadlines and an ability to work collaboratively in a fluid organizational and external environment.
  • Well-honed political sensitivities and the utmost integrity while having the executive presence and acumen necessary to deal effectively with and anticipate the needs of senior leaders and external stakeholders
  • Must be an individual who works well in a team environment and enjoys working in a collegial, collaborative and fun, yet highly demanding culture.
