Job Title: Custodial Supervisor

Department: Custodial

Reports To: Safety & Quality Manager

FLSA Status: Exempt

Compensation: Anticipated Starting Salary $44,563 - $47,184 per year DOE, plus a comprehensive benefit package, which includes medical, dental, vision, life and LTD insurance, FSA, HRA, 403(b) retirement plan, paid holidays, personal business, sick leave, and vacation.

Summary

The Custodial Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the Museum’s custodial team and ensuring buildings, public spaces, and operational areas are consistently clean and safe. This position provides the daily supervision of custodial staff, coordinates work assignments, and monitors the quality and consistency of cleaning throughout the Museum.

The supervisor is primarily operational, spending much of the workday overseeing custodial activities throughout the Museum, while balancing the planning and administrative responsibilities necessary to maintain accountability for standards, training, scheduling, inventory, and daily operations. The role regularly identifies opportunities to improve efficiency, quality, and safety while ensuring custodial services effectively support the Museum’s guests, staff, and events.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):

Lead Daily Custodial Operations

  • Oversee operations to ensure Museum facilities are consistently clean and well maintained.
  • Assign, prioritize, and adjust daily work based on operational needs, attendance, weather, special events, and staffing levels.
  • Regularly inspect facilities and grounds to ensure established cleanliness standards are met.
  • Coordinate facility setup and breakdown requests to support meetings, events, and Museum operations.

Supervise and Develop the Team

  • Supervise, schedule, train, coach, and evaluate custodial staff, providing regular feedback and maintaining clear performance expectations.
  • Lead by example while fostering a culture of teamwork, respect, and attention to detail.
  • Ensure staff receive appropriate training in cleaning practices, equipment operation, chemical handling, and workplace safety.
  • Monitor attendance, productivity, and work quality while actively and timely addressing performance concerns.

Maintain Safe and Efficient Operations

  • Ensure Compliance with OSHA requirements, Museum policies, and safe work practices.
  • Monitor custodial equipment to ensure it is properly maintained, secured, operated, and available for daily use.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels of custodial supplies and coordinate purchasing to support uninterrupted operations.

Monitor Quality and Improve Processes

  • Regularly evaluate custodial procedures and recommend improvements for efficiency and consistency.
  • Respond promptly to operational issues, guest concerns, and changing priorities.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to operations, inventory, safety, and training.

Supervisory Responsibilities                                                    

Directly supervise employees in the Custodial Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience

High school diploma plus a minimum of 5 years related experience and/or training, and a minimum of 3 years supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of OSHA standards.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of or the ability to learn internet software, inventory software, payroll software, and Word processing software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must have or be able to obtain an Arizona Driver's License.
